This is moreso based in a Highschool situation. I know that it's generally easier to get to know a person at the beginning of the year because you can ask them questions about summer and there isn't previous knowledge always. But what about when school is 3/4 through the year? I mean, if you hadn't shown any interest to them (as it would appear visually) for those first three fourths of the school year, what would they think this far into the year?

Well dude,I'm kind of having to do the same thing,if you have a class with the girl, you have to just strike up conversationyou can't wait for them to do itYou don't have to go up to her and say "hi, let's date"you can be more "hi, we've never really talked before"yeah, it's kind of cheesy, but it'll make them laughnothing happens overnightyou just have to take it slowand be yourselfit doesn't matter what you talk abouttopics come into your head at the most random timesyou just have to let it happen

talk about tests, their plans for this summer, if they play sports, hobbies, etc... and ALWAYS ask questions, girls like a guy who can listen. If your doing it right you shouldn't be talking the most, they should.
-
I just find it odd to have someone you've never really talked with before start talking to you like that, Idk. Tests and classes are easy to talk about, though. Probably because talking about it seems like it would be more relevant and make sense. I'll see.

Just start off with something light (like he said - classes)then move on to more in depth things -- friends, what she does for fun, and whatever pops up,the most boring conversations can lead in to the funniest conversations
-
Be casual, if you're both waiting in the canteen line, or both walking to class just throw out a direct, friendly, confident greeting, or conversation starter."Hey Jess, what's been happening?" "What up Jess?""What do you think of Mr. Palmer?""I saw you playing netball the other day, you're pretty good"
-
Don't worry too much about whether it's odd. If we can't start anything without a strong reason, how can anything be started? How can life change? Life is fun because of surprises, and you are allowed to start them. To do the unexpected is often a good way to get more control over your life, because it catches the forces of resistance and conformity off-guard.
