Hey members. I have several questions really : i am trying to gain weight , so i am going on a strict diet and exercise routine. I have been skinny all of my life, and after almost every meal i have take a crap afterwards. So my questions are :How often should a person have a bowel movement?and Will I not gain weight if I have frequent bowel movements? Therefore, should I fight the urge to shit and maybe limit myself to a certain ammount of bowel movements a day? Thanks in advance everyone.

How often should you go?

there is no set number of times, your body will go when it needs to. Not going when you need to, and holding it in can cause all kinds of problems, you should never hold it in if you can help it. And no, how many bowel movements you have does not determine whether you gain or lose wieght.

Thought I agree with most of what Angel said, my specialist I go to for my bowels says a person should defecate an average of three times a day.And as Angel said, your frequent bowel movements will not affect your weight gain, unless your body isn’t absorbing the food properly. Something I am sure you don’t have to worry about.

...frequent bowel movements? Are they loose? If you have frequent loose bowel movements, it might indicate a digestive system problem. Otherwise, pooping a lot just means that you eat a lot.> Therefore, should I fight the urge to shit and maybe limit myself to a certain ammount of bowel movements a day?No! Once the crap in in the large intestine, ready to go out, your body is done with it. No more nutrients will be absorbed. It's like trying to keep a fire going in your fireplace by not shoveling out the white ashes. It does more harm than good.Forcing yourself not to poop will lead to constipation, which will lead to cramps, which will make you not want to eat.Have you tried protein powders (like whey protein)? Nutrition drinks between meals? Look up Scandi Shake, which is a powder that you mix with milk. A cup of that stuff has a lot of calories, and it doesn't taste bad. (Your pharmacy can order Scandi Shake (you don't need a prescription), or do a Google search to find their Web site.)

3 times a DAY!? jeeeez! anyway, once youre ready to go its not likely to be much benifit to you anymore and holding onto stuff that aint ment to there is just gonna mess up your bowels and will only give you false readings. kinda like holding onto a pile of bricks while you get on the scales. its been publicised over here recently that kids at school arent getting enough of the things they need in their diet and are getting constipated to the extent theyre actually vomiting their bowel movements so im sure the same would happen if you held it in long enough. either that or it would turn into cement in your bowls. not nice

I know I said the same thing when he told me. But he reminded me thats an average, some people will go less and some people will go more. But he did make it clear that people that only go once a day or once every other day have poor bowl function. I suppose it can all be subjective.I remember when I was in 1st grade i would refuse to use the toilets at school because we had no doors on the stalls.. to would have been too embarrassing. How I held it sometimes I have no clue! LoL.

thanks everyone for your replys. And i will look into the protein shakes. its nearly impossible to make 5 meals a day. those shakes will be nice. I tried to go straight into my new 5 meal day yesturday... needless to say i had the runs all day... so im taking it easy for the first week to get used to it now. cause yesturday was no fun. lol

I would suggest you investigate your going so frequently with your doctor. Sounds like you may have a food allergy (such as lactose intolerance) or possibly irritable bowl syndrome. Constant runs is not a good thing, just like hard bowl movements are not good. A proper balance of nutrients and fiber in your diet should give you regular bowl movements that are not runny or hard.

I asked, but the OP never said whether his BMs were runny. If they look fine, then I'm not sure that going seveeral times a day is bad, although it is odd.
