I'd say, get the nicest used guitar you can afford (well, don't go overboard) and treat it like your baby. If you decide you don't want to keep playing, you can always sell it and get most or all of your money back (if you don't damage it). You want a guitar with good (i.e., low) action. That means that it shouldn't take a lot of effort to press the strings down, without having them buzz.If you buy a used one, bring someone with you who can check for the neck being warped or twisted, which will cause all kinds of problems. I also recommend a hard case, if you're going to carry it around. Also, I'd recommend lessons, especially at the beginning. It's better to get into good playing habits from the start.

If i was you i'd go for something cheap to start off with, i wouldnt spend more than $120-$140 on it, i got an Electric Guitar which i got for christmas a few years ago, i was really enthusiastic to learn but i still havent got round to it.Saw some guy today with a pink acoustic guitar looked well cool!

Washburn makes a great acoustic guitar if you're looking for something a little cheaper.

despite what has been said....Get a cheap ass acoustic. It makes you work very hard on getting it to sound right. I have a total POS, and I have to really focus on what I am doing to get anything I play on it to sound decent, but when I go ahead and plug in my electric and start playing, it is a breeze..So my oppinion...Cheap acoustic that at least looks aesthetic.

I think getting a cheap acoustic with bad action (i.e., where it's hard to fret the strings without them buzzing) is a very bad idea, and may lead to frustration and quitting. If he doesn't want to spend a lot of money, and is able to find a cheap guitar with decent action, then he should go for it. I still think "used" is the way to go.An electric guitar is a completely different thing.

Yep, I say used as well. You don't want to lay out to much $$$ until you know you're gonna stick with it.Around these parts you can get a good used Washburn acoustic for around $100-$150.

That seems reasonable. A used Yamaha might be worth thinking about, although I'm not sure that I'd recommend their cheapest models.
-
Yeah, Yamaha's a good one for starters too. One of the advantages of buying used is that you don't have to get the bottom of the line model.
-
oh ok, so what do i look for when going out to buy one?

If you're a beginner buying a used guitar:o isn't falling aparto doesn't have a bent or twisted necko feels goodo sounds goodo looks good...in that order. Of course, affordability fits in there somewhere.Scratches and dents are OK...they'll let you bargain down the price.
