Ok so i have a black belt in karate under, well my belt, already. Now i want to start boxing. I figure it will be a good way to workout, as well as boost my confidence. Arturo Gatti is my inspiration, the man is amazing. Also i am really inspired by tony danza. he's been fighting his whole life, and he looks great still. I want to do it, im motivated. I just need help on where to start.

Boxing
-
I tried but apparently there are no clubs anywhere near where i live. i searched the yellow pages and nothing. this blows

I don't understand a sport where the objective is to brain-damage your opponent. There have to be better ways to stay fit.
-
ITs not about that. Its about fitness and confidence. ITs the fact that you dont have to walk around telling everyone ur a boxer, but you walk around knowing you are a boxer. You are fearless and confident. Thats what i want. I had it when i was in karate, but boxing has been something ive always wanted to do

You could say the same things about joining a ghetto gang. It's a macho fantasy. Boxing for fun will not turn you into an amazing person. Professionally, it's among the most corrupt sports that exist. When you're in a boxing ring, what is the goal? Isn't it to knock out the other guy (i.e., cause a concussion, which is a form of brain damage)? What's the point of putting all that time, effort, and money into a college education, only to have it undone by blows to the head?
-
One of the most demanding sports, but since your backround is in martial arts, can't you find a different style to practice? You did Karate? Try Kung-Fu. You Did Kung-Fu, try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Those are just some suggestions. I think boxing is highly misinterpreted with people only seeing the brutality, and not the wits, speed and accuracy that you need to fight, so I say GO FOR IT, you will only improve your life skills. Better concentration, more discipline, higher understanding of how to avoid a fight (martial arts) and how to end it quick if one breaks out. You will only benefit from boxing, so I say go for it, and don't let misinformed individuals change your mind. Look online for a gym in your area (where is your area?).
-
thanks, i wont let them change my mind. I look in the yellow pages, online, everywhere. I cant find anything. I live in teh suburbs outside of chicago. Everything i find is too damn far away. Maybe i should train myself

People that dont get it, dont get it. No amount of explaining will ever get them to get it. Either you do or you dont.
I love boxing! if things were different Id be back in a gym fighting in a heart beat. I was in better shape, looked better and fealt better when I was fighting.
I wont even attempt to defend my position on boxing, if your against it or dont understand, no amount of defending or talking or arguing will ever get you to get it.
y dad was a boxer, navy champ in Japan 1958, boxing was important in our family when I was a kid, it was when I got to see my dad and the connection I had to him sitting on the floor in the front room with yellow carpet and orange drapes pulled shut to keep the light off the 27" console floor model tv watching ABC's wide world of sports to catch the boxing with howard cosell. I saw the greats like Ali and the old footage of the golden age of boxing. A past champ lives about an hour from me and Iv met him a few times in fact Im now 34 and my dad is 68, we still sat down together Sunday to watch Gatti fight and we have had many good nights sittiing in front of hte tv watching a fight on my satellite and paying out the ass for it. I dont know how many times me and my dad have sat to see Oscar DlHoya fight and one of my earliest sporting memorys is gong to the salt palace with my dad to see Sugar Ray Leonard fight Thommas the hit man hearns on a tv screen from a private broadcast from the fight site.
and uhhhhh
I sorta got way off topic and forgot why I started my rant to being with.
Ata7, you wanna fight?
reeearch it, know the risks and that youll prolly never be a pro and you only in for a world of hurt maybe some fake teeth. If after you really look into the effects f fighting and want into the life, fucking go for it.
Just beware of very real risks and know what they are before you get into it. -
No i have no intention of going pro. I want to do it for the exercise, the confidence, and the stress release it provides. Like i said, i was in karate for 9 years, i know what its like to spar, only that involved kicks to the head to add to the punches. Ive just always had a fascination for boxing. My uncle boxed, and Gatti is my hero. I will do it, with or without a gym, ill manage

I get it. You're impressed by the romance and coolness of it. But that doesn't change the fact that the objective of boxing is to cause brain damage to your opponent. That's not an exaggeration. The AMA and many other medical societies agree (although as a libertarian, I don't support a ban. I just think it's a brain-dead thing to do).In reply to:In 1983, The Journal of the American Medical Association called for a ban on boxing. The editor, Dr. George Lundberg, called boxing an "obscenity" that "should not be sanctioned by any civilized society." Since the AMA called for abolition of boxing, the British, Canadian, Australian and World Medical Association have also called for the sport's abolition, as have the American Neurological Association and the American Academy of Neurology. In reply to:Dr. Bill O'Neill, boxing spokesman for the British Medical Association, has said in support of the BMA's proposed ban on boxing, "It is the only sport where the intention is to inflict serious injury on your opponent, and we feel that we must have a total ban on boxing."I think physicians "get" the idea of brain damage. Stick your head in the right imaging equipment, and you can see it.
-
That all depends.Ameture has different rules then pro and protective equipment is required. and you really dont get it.I have some brain damage from boxing and other stupid shit Iv done. Thats why I dont box anymore Im banned on medical reasons. I cant pass the eeg because i have "static" in the background. The romance of it eh, that is part of it. Not to mention I really did like to fight. Theres more then that but thats not all of why.I alos lost a few teeth and had 2 grand of dental work done to put a bridge in the fornt top of my teeth are ceramic and drilled into my upper jaw to hold them in place permenantly. There are risks, real risks to boxing, I knew them when I got involved and accepted them and if I could pass the medical Id be back in the ring again even though I know there is no hope of me maiking money or going pro.I wont argue those risks Iknow they are there I alos know the risks I take with the other things i love.even if the risks are reduced or eliminated you will never get a doc to say boxing is great and harmless.the point is if your going to do it know what the risks are and accept them or stay out of it.Ameture boxing isnt about damage its about points. Its easier to score points based on a connection with the right part of your glove to the opponent then it is to knock them out.Its stil possible to knock em out, I lost a few when I was fighting and a couple of them were by KO.
-
I really don't get it.Young kids are boxing and getting injured. The AMA is really up in arms about that.> I wont argue those risks Iknow they are there I alos know the risks I take with the other things i love. The problem is that the risk you are taking is with your brain. I used to ski like a crazy person in the ice of northern New England (until I blew out my knee). I know there was a risk of death. I once skied past someone who had just skied into a tree and died. But the risk of brain damage was a lot lower than in boxing, and hurting people was not among the objectives.> Ameture boxing isnt about damage its about points. You don't get any points for knocking someone out (i.e., traumatizing their brain)?
-
If they are knocked out they cant fight you win. However with the gear and head gear and gloves its not easy to knock someone out not to mention even with out that gear its not easy to knock them out.Ameture is about the point system. The round time is shorter also. Its easier to win a fight based on scoring points based on the flat of your glove making a connection.Olympics have the money to back up a glove with sensors built into it to determine the connection being made with the correct part and private gyms and rec leagues have to rely on judges to count and score each hit deciding if it was a good hit, if it was the correct placement to award each point.as to pro boxing being fixed and fucked and corrupted,I couldnt agree more, its been going downhill for years.the worst thing I think about pro boxing though is that it still associates with that tyrant bastard, larry merchant.Thats one man Id like to bust in the ass and I would like to bust big george for saving his ass a few years back in vegas during the riot.I like George, I just think he should be hit for saving larrys ass Thats why I watch any HBO fights with the sound off so I dont have to hear that slack jawed bastard talk like hes in the ring and can do so much better and slam the fighters wh are taking the punishment, cocky arrogant piss face bastard.uhh sorry, got off on a rant about merchant, its hard to not, he really is a pisser as any fan of boxing in America can tell you thats suffered thru his broadcasts.
-
Don King's no paragon of virtue. More like, a corrupt bloodsucking bastard.
-
I agree 100%, but he has comic value, larry merchant doesnt so hes just below King in my book.of course anyone on Kings payroll knows what a lying cheat snake bastard he is and anyone who had ever been managed by king learne first hand what a life sucking money draining bastard he is. If I fell into one of those two columns, I would probally have to rate king lower then Merchant

There are more injuries, by far, in football than boxing. Even more deaths, believe it or not. How many Americans stay glued to the TV to watch over-bulked muscle men slap eachother on the ass? Who cares...it is stupid, beyond explanation. Hey, who's in the Superbowl this year? Who the fuck cares, give me something with real skill, with REAL RISK any day. Life is a risk, it is a fight and a struggle, and boxing is just a reflection of life, in my personal opinion.
-
I think it's great when people want to try new things... Don't let anyone tell you that you cant or _shouldnt _ do it.
-
Whaddup, Wall. How was your trip?Man, too bad, but I can't get that link to open. Maybe cause I'm on a MacDaddy. It sounds pretty cool, with the risks probably ranging from drowning to cutting off some fingaz. Pencil me in!
-
Woow..!! Long time no see!
-
Whaddup PinkRanger? Good to see you too, girl. (nice pic, my how we have grown)
