Hello, i have a few questions about sperm and their lifespans...I am wondering how long sperm can live outside the body. ie. not inside the female. in open air. how long will sperm live in open air? Is there any risk of conseption from for instance a girl haveing sperm on her hand any then going to the bathroom and whiping after going pee? Is there any risk of conception from having sperm touch any surrounding areas to the vagina? or other areas to the body..Basically how carful do you have to be playing around? are there any great risks with sperm outside the body getting into the vagina and causing accidental impregnation? Thanks for any information..

Sperm can live for several hours outside of the body. It's the temperature that eventually kills them - sperm need it warm, near body temp. Room temperature is too cold and they die in a few hours.
There is a "chance" of conception from getting sperm near the vaginal opening within a few hours after they have been ejaculated. That chance is extremely small though, and the odds of conception gets smaller as time since ejaculation goes on (i.e. there are much more live swimming sperm in semen a few minutes after ejaculation than there are a few hours after ejaculation).
There is no other risk besides near the vaginal opening.
There is a reason why we ejaculate 250 million+ sperm each time: most sperm don't make it to the egg and fertilize it. Out of the 250 million in an ejaculation, only one or two will make it to the egg and fertilize it if its there, and sometimes none of them will make it. And that's assuming a normal deposit of sperm with the penis way inside the vagina during ejaculation. The chances of sperm sitting outside the vagina making there way inside and all the way to the egg to fertilize it is much less. Still a chance, but very small.

It's the temperature that eventually kills themAnd dehydration. Dried-out sperm is dead sperm.

So would a girl have to worry about having semen on her hand and getting accidentally inseminated? or anything like that? What is being safe & carful?? and what is being parinoid?? Thanks again

So would a girl have to worry about having semen on her hand and getting accidentally inseminated? or anything like that?It depends. If it's been there for a few minutes, probably so. If it's been there for several hours, probably no.> What is being safe & carful?? and what is being parinoid??If you guys are fooling around and she gets semen on her hands, if she's not on some form of birth control, she shouldn't put her fingers on or in her vagina, unless she washes her hands first. Hand washing will definitely get rid of the sperm, if she's at all thorough while washing.

In reply to: If it's been there for several hours, probably no. Though, I'd hope she would wash her hands before then

Hah, that reminds me of the "waste of time?" thread.

a little hygiene goes a long way

Ok thanks for the info... the question was poorly worded on my part... I was wondering if just washing your hands afterwards you would be ok or what? I can’t really think of anyone who would not clean off there hands or wash them after that sort of activity. I was really just wondering what to be careful about and what is not really a big deal. Is there any chance that semen or sperm could get threw clothing from one person to another? If they were very close or something? Is it possible for sperm to be alive in a bed perhaps and could a girl run the risk of getting inseminated from sleeping in that bed naked or anything like that? I’m not talking like the bed is wet or anything I just mean if some got on the sheets and then hours later the girl was to sleep in the bed?Basically how careful do you have to be? like should one be concerned about the things I’m asking?? or is it being paranoid and never likely to happen if one is careful and sensible??thanks again.

**warning ** unpolular opinion alert**
Seriously, if you have to be that paranoid about it...maybe you should not be having any kind of sex. Sounds like you're rather young. Maybe you should just be kissing and hugging and leaving the sexual activity until you're older and know more and are more capable of being more responsible. (I say that knowing that your questions here are part of your gaining knowledge. I honor that.)

Well thanks, Im 19 BTW. Im just asking everything to be sure. thats all.

And that's a good thing.I actually assumed you were younger. Sorry.
-
No harm. Im just asking alot of questions i suppose it would look like im younger.

> Is there any chance that semen or sperm could get threw clothing from one person to another? If they were very close or something?
If the surface of the clothing is wet, and there's enough liquid there to penetrate through another layer of clothing, then it's possible, but quite unlikely to lead to pregnancy.
> Is it possible for sperm to be alive in a bed perhaps and could a girl run the risk of getting inseminated from sleeping in that bed naked or anything like that?
It she lies just the right way on a wet spot, maybe. Not real likely, but possible.
> I'm not talking like the bed is wet or anything I just mean if some got on the sheets and then hours later the girl was to sleep in the bed?
Oh, OK then. If it's dry, then there's no chance.
> Basically how careful do you have to be? like should one be concerned about the things I'm asking?? or is it being paranoid and never likely to happen if one is careful and sensible??
Pregnancy is not the only issue. If I were the girl, I'd be concerned about disease. Semen can carry pathogens just as blood can.
