So I am 4mos preg when to the Dr. for my checkup and they did blood work, well the Dr. says "well they accidently tested you for herpes, and you are positive did you know? I freaked out, I was like, of course not, no never no clue!!! She then proceded to tell me, "no its no big deal, do you get cold sores? I said "no" she said "maybe as a kid"? I said I really didn't know, but she said it was no big deal I probally had gotten them when I was a kid and as a precaution would put me on Valtrex at 36weeks to prevent outbreaks, because Herpes can be deadly to a newborn. OKAY- I was so in shock, and not knowing much about herpes until I went home and researched it now I have a ton of questions!!!1. So does this mean I only have HSV1 because she wasn't concerned at the least? 2. Can you have HSV1 and not 2?3. Will I get HSV2 or gential herpes outbreaks?4. If it had been gential would she have gone into it more with me and how to be careful? What did that mean? I called her later and she said "Aw honey I wish they never tested you because you would have never known, don't worry about it. But I am freakin out!!! Will I get genital herpes? Should my husband and I be careful?I am planning a trip to talk to her but I am so confused, can anyone help me out and translate?Thank you!!!! (sorry it was so long! )

Welcome to the board. I’m sorry they tested you. I would have the doctor’s head on a platter if they did that to me. They sometimes try that crap when they screen for HIVFirst of all... Take a big, long breath and try to relax. It does nobody any good being all stressed out about it... I’m not an expert on the subject but have a look at these web sites. And now that you know, discuss it with your husband and you guys work on it together. My mother got cold sores every few months when I was a kid. She used to call them fever blisters and cankers sores. I never got any of them….Get back with us and let us know how things are going...Remember it’s not the end of the world and I’m sure the doctor will not allow anything to happen to your baby. That is what prenatal care is for…http://www.herpes.com/hsv1-2.htmlhttp://herpesonline.org/hsv1vs2.htmlhttp://www.yoshi2me.com/hsv1-hsv2.html

Sure……..I guess it would be, but they did it without consent. I know some men who are HIV and were tested without consent and their insurance policies were dropped because it had to be disclosed. I would have made it quit clear I was not happy they tested with my consent. But overall, you’re right. It is much better to know for the baby’s sake and care.

First of all thanks for your response, I was just in so much shock! And then I was fine until I got home and started researching herpes and totally freaked myself out I think. Yes, even the Dr. said it was a good thing that they did test since I was preg. but I have never had any outbreaks or symtoms so I guess I just am so unsure of what happens next. Just such a wierd way to find out and without knowing anything about it!

insurance policies were dropped because it had to be disclosedOh wow.. that would suck. I didn't know that was allowed to happen.

The virus is probably dormant. The infection was probably minor and your body is able to suppress it. That's not to mean that if you get seriously sick some day and your immune system drops, that virus won't surface. HSV1 and 2 I believe are the same virus, it's the location that gives it the different designation.

Yep..... This happened early last year in California, just before we moved here. . These guys and I were involved in the AIDSVAC trial, AIDS vaccine research sponsored by VAC-JEN . AIDS Research Alliance, West Hollywood, CA. Johns Hopkins University AIDSVAC trial. Once someone becomes infected with the AIDS Virus, they have to register your name and static’s with the National Disease Control Center. They also list you in a national databank red flagging you incase you donate blood. A lot of insurance companies review these lists to protect themselves (Insurance underwriters from potential clients buying life insurance or medical policies with pre existing medical conditions. And many times people with AIDS or who have HIV status are dropped. It sucks and it’s discriminating but its real life….

Sorry sdp...HSV 1 And 2 are different. USUALLY HSV 1 is found on the mouth, and HSV 2 is on the genetal area. BUT either one can be found on EITHER place. There is no way for the Dr to know where your herpes reside from a blood test. It is good to know though especially pregnant! If the stress of labor caused a genital outbreak, you could really be putting the baby in danger.

Under a microscope, HSV- 1 and 2 are virtually identical, sharing approximately 50% of their DNA.You're right. What I meant to say is that either one is virtually the same whether you had type I or II. The OP was had questions, and I meant that it didn't matter which type she had, the risk would be the same if it was in the genital region.
