Today i went to my dentist and i got a filling in today. After i got it my gf asked me what kind i got and i said the silver one. She started to freak out about that because her teacher told her that there's mercury in it and it's highly toxic and can cause cancer. i've been researching it online and found out the ADA kept it secret until 1980 that the mercury can cause problems. Even more surprising is that if your dentist tells you that the mercury is likely to cause problems they can lose their lisence! I also heard that this can cause birth defects also. I'm not trying to have kids now but i don't want there to be any problems in the future. Who else thinks this is outrageous? I heard about this mercury thing on Seinfeld and i thought they fixed the problem (since it's the 21st century) When he asked me which filling i wanted he introduced them as silver and the tooth colored one which was more expensive by a little.

In terms of mechanical strength, amalgam is still better than the others, though it doesn't look as good. Mercury is a toxic metal, but it's bound tightly to other metals in the amalgam and my understanding is that it has been shown that no significant amount gets into the biosystem. I haven't kept up to date on the issue, though.

You'll be fine. I have a silver filling as well. It's too small to do anything to you. If there was any chance of it hurting you, dentists would not be allowed to put them in. The only negative thing about them is that they can wear down over time. They're not as strong as the other type of filling. Most insurance companies only cover silver fillings, unless it's a front tooth that needs a filling.

As a former dental nurse, I can assure you that amalgam will do you absolutely no harm. Don't worry.

paranoid i have them too if they werent safe they would use

It is true that mercury is highly toxic. Type mercry under google you will see that it is insane for any dentist to put that in the mouth. But will it make you sick or cause birth defects? Probably not unless your body is highly allergic to it.

you will see that it is insane for any dentist to put that in the mouth.Ummm why? http://www.cda.org/articles/amalgam.htmhttp://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/mercury.html

Well as you can see, there are two different views. One from the dental assosiation and one from critics. Some reports were correct that two fillings on opposing teeth do ru together and does release mercury. Mercury is toxic, although small doses may not cause problems, people with many fillings may react. Question...why do dentist still use mercury fillings? They are ugly anyways. I'm just glad that the advocates against asbestos won. Oh yea and lead.

Just to let you know I work in a dental office and have for a few years now. The mercury in Amalgam is nonnative and will cause not harm to your body, so you can relax.Trust me the ADA will not keep promoting something that is proven to cause damage, it just wouldn’t happen. One thing I have learned about the ADA is they are strict and have stricter rules and guidelines.

The mercury in Amalgam is nonnative I don't understand what that means.
-
Mercury has two states, active and nonactive. In Amalgam they use a nonactive form of mercury, thus making it nontoxic.
-
OK you wrote non-native.

LOL oh sorry didn't catch on to that.
