Do you ever think it's wrong the way certain people are portrayed in the entertainment or publishing industry? Just, you know, degrading?
-
Degradation
-
Yep.
-
yes ditto with helms' comment. What do you mean exactly?
-
like the way they portray girls as sex objects; asians as nerdy and restaurant owners; blacks and latinos as ghetto and dangerous; the music videos, the overexaggerated drawn anime cartoons that are supposedly made for kids; etc
-
Its the number one reason i dont watch music vidoes... "Rap" especially!! But they arnt always portraied that way, well the stuff i watch atleast.
-
I find it really depressing. I think it has an influence on how people treat each other.
-
You mean as in like "Stereotypes? SOMEtimes those stereo types are true, in rare occasians!
-
Yes unfortunately. But in a way it's affecting people who want nothing to do with it and are treated a certain way. For example, an asian may be mocked for being some nerdy smart kid when he could be just as normal and laid back as any other kid. Or a girl who tries to avoid certain things is constantly harrassed and hurtled insulting perverted comments because of how her kind is portrayed on tv. Something like that.
-
I dont know why people want to follow t.vs commmands those people can dress what ever way they want we dont have to copy them!
-
Yes in that case I totally agree. That sex is portrayed as something so casual or something that is advocated between two strangers. In most cases in the movies/tv they are being safe, but most kids will not understand that aspect and will just do it to be cool.
-
not the same direction I was going but that's absolutely true.
-
hahahaha sorry, lol
-
a lot of media stereotyping is self induced.
Artist in most genres make stereotypical videos.
Many poeple in the spot light act the way they're expected to act. Sometimes, if you watch closely, you can see the transformation as someone has his image sculpted. -
In the beginning I thought that The Simpsons were a little risky, but my children grew up to them. I dont want my younger ones to watch Family Guy, thats for me. And Family Guy is mild compared to others. Never mind so much open sex, what about the violence associated with cartoons and music videos and any other show. This generation is going to be too desensitized to sex and death. No wonder why its all going wrong. Just to think that I masterbated to women in bikinis in the national enquirer at 13 years old. Hell they even banned a clip from Dire Straits Money For Nothing Video. It showed a brief clip of a brunette in black & white pulling up her stockings, now that got me hard back then. Not only is sex everywere on tv, but hardcore porn is also available to everyone. When I was new to the net,my youngest daughter wanted to go on the Barbie website, you know dolls. So I typed in the obvious www.(the name).com. That was a huge fuckin mistake, it was a porn site, and she was only 5. Damn I feel bad to this day. So not only is porn available, you even get it when you type in the wrong web adress.

what freaks me out is that sex is concidered way worse than violence when it comes to censorship in the US. The Janet Jackson thing from superbowl really exemplified this. It's a BOOB... it's not the end of Holy American Morality forever! To paraphrase an email I sent to CNN and Wolf read on the air... what's wrong with America? when I can tune in and see dead bodies lying in the streets of Bagdad on the 6:00 news but 1 second of bare breast is the biggest contoversy to hit the TV ever?!
-
haha, i watched south park and the simpsons and all that when i was young. so i was watchin south park when i was about 10...
ur right, totaly fucks u up.loli hate how ppl r getting desencitized 2 death and violence. its sick. i cant understand the facination with movies like "saw", they r sick!

In reply to: like the way they portray girls as sex objects; asians as nerdy and restaurant owners; blacks and latinos as ghetto and dangerous; the music videos, the overexaggerated drawn anime cartoons that are supposedly made for kids; etc I see you (and everyone else in the thread so far) fail to mention the despicable way that the average white heterosexual male is portrayed in the media.
-
Hey sweetie! Have you seen the movie Crash? If not, I think you would enjoy it. It's about stereotyping of all sorts.I think it's sad the way people are stereotyped. However, there are things that have helped to build those stereotypes and then it's exaggerated and blown out of proportion. Of course we see it on t.v. so it must be true so we buy into it. It's a vicious circle. Probably why I don't watch much t.v. Well, there's the Discovery and History Channel but that's about it.
-
oh boy. I think I should have just come right out and say it to begin with. I'm sort of trying to say like... if you have people on your block constantly watching some nasty sex-crazed show or in other words porn it's sort of degrading to women in general. And then it's as if they feel they can go out and start shooting perverted and offensive comments or touching and grabbing female bystanders with no concern to their regards. Eh, something like that... an example. And SYL, the thing is with that. People LOVE that and are worshipped for being just like that. And how are they portrayed as? Just curious.

Hey Abby.....
I've read the thread... It seems like your personal point wasn't exactly reached... Did someone say something to you or did something happen to you to make you feel degraded . What happened?
