I disagree with "NtroducingMyself" ...But the Penis is usually very under developed and is removed...." I knew a girl that was a hermaphrodite. She had a penis that was the size and girth of an average male. Directly underneath this (where the testicles were supposed to be) she had an opening with labia on either side. This was a vaginal opening. She could finger her hole and stroke her penis at the same time. She could even climax from the penis, but there was no sperm in the ejaculate. She also had no ovaries so she could never get pregnant. Would I have sex with her? If she asked, Sure. I would have loved to have sex with her.

NtroducingMyself said "usually"...I wonder how common your friend's situation is. Your friend was genetically a girl?
I'd think a heraphrodite would have either testicles or ovaries (or neither), but not both, since they each originates from the same tissue.

I believe there are very rare cases known that have one of each. It's possible for a single person to have cells from two different fertilised eggs that fused at an early stage. It's possible for one cell line to be male and the other female. However, since gender differentiation is mostly driven by hormone levels in the blood, and these are the same for all cells, this doesn't usually produce a hermaphrodite.

well i think it would be some very interesting sex.

As SteveA said, I said "usually". Not every situation is the same and there are people out there who did not have gender construction when born a hermaphrodite. But in most cases, the child goes under this construction so to live the most “normal” life possible. Sometimes it’s not easy to identify the sex of a child so the child would live out being a hermaphrodite until it can be detected which gender the child truly is. I think your friend’s situation is a rare situation.

Can't they do a genetic test, and count the number of X and Y chromosomes? (Sometimes there are extras.)
-
In reply to:Can't they do a genetic test, and count the number of X and Y chromosomes? Yes that's exactly what they do. They (usually) take a cheek scraping then kareotype the DNA.

Leelee answered it well for me hehe. The issue usually comes into play if the family can afford such testing or if the insurance allows the testing.
