That was pretty hard to read, in all-caps and with no punctuation, but do you believe that literally?

The other thread was abstract religion. This thread is applied religion.

religion is soooooo last week. the new phase is politics

OK, so your a fundamentalist. Unfortunately, some people's religious beliefs are at odds with other people's rights, so the government has to step in and protect everyone's rights. In the 1800's and before, some people used the bible to justify the enslavement of black people by white people. In the 1900's, some people used the bible to justify their belief that blacks didn't deserve all of the rights that white men enjoyed. Some people also used the bible to explain why women shouldn't be allowed to vote, why alcohol should be illegal, and why people should not be allowed to marry outside of their race. For the most part, it's a waste of time to convince fundamentalist believers that they're wrong. But as a culture's ethics evolve, the government is prodded into action. Sometimes the evolution can be very rapid (e.g., the feeling toward the death penalty in Western Europe). The fact is that there is a core of people who want to pass a constitutional amendment defining what gay people can do in their relationships, whether they should go to jail for performing certain sexual acts with another consenting adult, etc., and that core is not made of liberal agnostics. At the end of the day, I don't care who believes what. But when their beliefs motivate them to trample the rights of other people, I care a lot.As an American, I don't agree with everything my government does, and I'm vocal about it (in fact, today I wrote a letter to one of my senators). It would make me feel a whole lot better about Christianity if more Christians would speak out against what some of their brethren are trying to do. This is not a knock against Christianity in particular. If I were in Saudi Arabia, I'd say Moslem/Wahabi rather than Christian (on my way to the gallows for blaspheming). I don't want the U.S. to turn into a Christian version of Saudi Arabia. So, am I doomed to hell, as the Christian scriptures say, because I (and the majority of the world) don't accept Jesus as the savior and son of God?

Religion is politics! The problem is when politics is religion.
-
I think same sex relationships are fine. It's wouldn't be fair to say they're not allowed to love who they want to love. When the rest of us can love who ever we want.
-
i fully agree and am happy some got this back on track of the original question. if we want to debate religion and politics start a new thread.
-
What is the main thing that determines why someone thinks that a same sex relationship is OK or not (at least in the U.S.)?
-
That'll be politics for 100 please steve?
-
for me it is a question of it bothering me or not. i dont have a problem with same sex couples. they arent bothering me at all so they should do what they want.

This (rather technical) article in Cell magaizine explains how, by splicing new DNA into a male fruit fly's genes, he can be made to exhibit mating behavior toward other male fruit flies: fruitless Splicing Specifies Male Courtship Behavior in Drosophila (fruitless is the name of a gene). Some ammunition to use against the folks who are oh-so-sure that homosexuality can't possibly be an in-born trait (once again, faith comes into conflict with science).
-
I think its wrong...BUT, I am against any and all legislation prohibiting it in the States...due to we were built on freedoms and others personal decisions have no bearing on my life unles they want to blow up a plane or something.Steve...As a biology major I agree that there are some pieces of evidence that may support homosexuality or pseudo-feminism in genetic make-ups...HOWEVER, the support is nothing that you can base a theory off of. For example human females are the homozygous sex (XX) whereas males are the heterozygous sex (XY). It is the complete opposite in drosophila (fruit fly) where the males are XXX and the females are XXY...there is a line of thought that believes that this does in fact make a difference (look at humans...females are more likely to engage in homosexual activity rather it be a kiss, sex, fellatio, or whatever than males (it is highly possible that it is partly societal as well), but women often times develop closer bonds/friendships among the same sex than males)

For example human females are the homozygous sex (XX) whereas males are the heterozygous sex (XY).The point is that there is evidence that genes affect sexual orientation. There is evidence of differences in brain structure, organization, and function in homosexual (versus heterosexual) males and females, as revealed by functional MRI studies. There is mounting scientific evidence (not proof!) that there is a biological basis for homosexuality, in part or in full.Yet there are people, usually motivated by their religious beliefs (since they already "know" the right answer, and just need to work backward to justify it) who insists, and are 100% sure, that homosexuality is a defective learned behavior. Evidence rolls off them like water off a camel's back. The word "evidence" has no meaning in their cut-and-dried life. They can believe whatever they want; I don't care. When they trample on other peoples rights, no matter their motivation, then I care a lot.> but women often times develop closer bonds/friendships among the same sex than malesYou're walking on very thin ice here, but it is possible that there's a genetic component in that behavior.
-
Possible but there is also evidence that points to the fact that it IS NOT genetic...rather a hormonal imbalance. Many homosexuals have been found to have elevated antesex hormones (estrogen in men and testosterone in women)...which has a very low probability of genetic origin (granted, I will concede there is a chance).I am just providing the data that I have collected from my Genetics courses...providing an antithesis to you theory as any good scientific debator would...I am NOT pushing a moral agenda or condoning or condeming homosexual behavior...rather I am supporting ideas with evidence just as you are.
-
Yes, but the accumulating evidence is tipping the balance toward homosexuality's having a genetic component. But since we don't know for sure that it's not genetic, and it in fact appears that there is a genetic component, it would be wrong to pass legislation restricting the rights of homosexuals, wouldn't it?Not so long ago, it was a crime to commit sodomy in Texas, although the law way only used against homosexuals, as far as I know.
-
Go back to my original post in the thread and you'll see that I did say I was AGAINST LEGISLATION restricting rights towards gays...but I can also feel it is wrong. As a mainstream/liberal Christian I am opposed to the act...HOWEVER, I was always taught to love the sinner and hate the sin...ergo, to love the sinner is to allow them to live according to the free will afforded us by God (if you believe, I do) and by the US Gov't.As someone said it is unfair to treat others to a different standard...it does happen, but we can limit it.Just because I am against the act doesn't make me a bad person because I in no way vote, have voted or will vote to obstruct personal freedoms.I like alcohol and porn...but I can't imagine if they got outlawed were we to live in a fundamental islamic state...same should go here..I CHOSE CHRISTIANITY and its beliefs...but I was also taught by the Savior I CHOSE to tolerate and love those who sin in the eyes of God...hell, even Jesus took in the most "unclean" in Nazareth...why should I treat someone else different from me as the untouchables of India.
-
I'd find it surprising if hormone levels weren't mainly controlled by genes, TxTechAirRaid. They're not things that are easily influenced by ordinary environmental factors. Also we know that giving oestrogen to men doesn't make them gay - it just gives them breasts. And giving testosterone to women makes them hornier, and then makes them grow facial hair.
