I'm going to the gynocologist for the first time at the end of the month (about when I'd get my period) for a general check-up and to ask about getting on the Pill.I've asked my mom if she remembers what they did at her first time, but she doesn't remember much.I know I can't know exactly what they'll do from the forum, but could I get a general idea? I'm really nervous about it.

First trip to the OB-GYN
-
Oh, I forgot to put this...I've been trimming my pubic hair, I think it's more comfortable and because it's bathing suit season. Is this going to be awkward? I've been told in advance that I'll have a female nurse do the examination, do you think she'll understand that I trimmed? Should I stop trimming until after the check-up?
-
I've never been the gynocologist, so I can't tell you what will happen, but I don't see why she would mind if you've trimmed your pubic hair. Loads of women do it, and it doesn't have any adverse effects so I don't see why you should stop. She's probably seen more than just trimmed.
-
They'll probably do what they do for every woman.A visual exam of the outer and inner labiaInsert speculum and do an internal visual examTake a small stick and scrap the cervix for the PAP testInsert 1-2 fingers to check the ovaries and for any other abnormalitiesCheck the breast for lumpsand talk to you about issues regarding concerns, sex and the pill
-
You trimming your pubic hair is no big deal, they won't even say anything to you about it. Don't worry. What happens is, they give you a paper blanket type thing, tell you to take off your clothes and lay on the table and cover yourself, this who time the doctor isn't in there while you take off your clothes. They will then come back in in a couple of minutes. They will scoot you down on the table and will put your feet in holders. Turn on a big light and shine it on your vagina. They will stick this metal thing in you and then it opens up and then they swab you and then they take it out. It is a little uncomfortable, but it all happens so fast. Don't worry about it. Then the Doctor will give you a breast exam. Then you can ask the Doctor the questions you need to and talk about getting on the pill and stuff. You cover yourself with the paper towel thing while you talk. Then it is all over and you leave. Not scary, you will be okay.

Do they still use metal speculums? My wife's doc/docs have always used disposable plastic speculums.
-
i was freaking out the first time i went to the Gyno too... but its really not as bad as its made out to be i promise. The biggest thing to remember is to relax. when they insert the metal thing in you to open you up if you tighten your muscles down there its going to hurt so just take alot of deep breaths and stay calm and it wont hurt... the only thing is that its a little awkward. i wax, and i went in entirely bald... and they never said anything to me so im sure they wont mind if you trim
-
My OB does use metal ones.
-
I talked to my mom about a PAP test, and she said that she didn't know if they'd do it since it was my first time.
Also, my hymen isn't broken. Would the speculum be large enough to break it?
I'm glad it'll be fast though.
-
Most likely they will give you a pap. It is important for all girls to start getting them when they get their period, and to keep getting them yearly.
The hymen will most likely be broke during the exam.
-
Metal speculums seem archaic.I do believe they have smaller speculums for young girls.
-
My mom said hers wasn't broken, just stretched. I'd go by that but I'm not sure if the speculum has changed any since my mom's first trip. She said she thinks it was a little bigger than a tampon.
I hope my doctor has a smaller speculum... That'd really ease my worry.
-
In reply to: The hymen will most likely be broke during the exam. This may be a bit off topic, but are you saying a doctor may break the hymen with the speculum?(I have been to the gyn's, but I live in a different country, mind you. I don't think they use speculums on virgins here).I'm just thinking - what if it is important for the girl to stay intact for religious or whatever reasons? The doctor may then mess up her life...
-
I'm more worried about bleeding everywhere and being embarassed or having it hurt and then being really paranoid about my next visit. But I see your point about it needing to remain intact for religious reasons.
-
Hon, these arn't pleasant experiences, but you will have to have them regularly to be healthy, and when you have babies etc LOL If you bleed etc, no worries they will have seen it all before, it may hurt a little, but i woudln't say a lot and its not a sharp pain more of a dull ache for a little while, then its gone. This kinda thing isn't a big deal, the doctors and nurses have done it about a million times before, to them its just a precedure, and if you can get it in your mind that its nothing big, it takes 5 mins and then you can forget about it, it won't be a big deal for you either. Relax, its not a nice thing, but its far from a horrible painful thing, like childbirth LOL
-
Once you start going you'll get used to it. My doctor makes me feel so comfortable its just like an anyday check up for me. Just remember to stay cool and that it doesnt take long and it will be over before you know it!
-
i went to a woman's health clinic for a check up. I never went to a gyno though, but i just wanna say i think they also use plastic speculums...im not sure if they use it in other clinics..
-
they used a plastic speculum when i went as well, never seen a metal one
-
I've had both. I haven't really noticed a difference between them.
