In my opinion, I care less about the lyrics of a song as long as the music's good. I'm a guitarist, so I guess this make sense. Zeppelin, and most other rock, I can never sing along too well since I don't know the words. My friends always give me a hard time about this but whatever. A lot of my friends tell me they like the lyrics because of the mood it puts them in and how it makes them feel. I have all sorts of music I like for my moods and I don't pay attention to the lyrics. I mean, I think my friendPaul's wrong. If I lsiten to a band making a political statement I disagree with and I like the band without realizing this, I'm not being brainwashed, I like the music. I like music, which explains why I like so much jazz and classical where there often isnt much in the way of vocals.Granted, some bands I listen to for lyrics also. KMFDM, one of my favorite bands, the lyrics are the best part, which is saying a lot, since their beats are awesome. Depeche Mode, the Who, Billy Idol. I don't know what it is, some songs I can just sing along easier with and therefore like the lyrics also. I think it boils down to this, when my mood's on the up and up I 'll just listen to musicwith nice guitar work, but when I feel angry or upset I'll listen to KMFDM or the Velvet Underground for the lyrics. Whatever. How does everyone else feel, is it the music or lyrics or both that draws you to your favorite bands.

Music vs. Lyrics
-
I mean it's my choice as to whether I want to sit downand analyze the lyrics and find meaning in them or just listen to the music. If I want to analyze, I'll go read T.S. Eliot.
-
Good music with bad lyrics kinda sucks and they dont go. Good lyric with bad music doesnt go. For music to be good in my opinion they have to have both. I can appreciate the aspects of it but just because a certain part of a song is good (e.g drums) it doesnt make the band worth listening to when they are so many bands out there who have the lyrics and the music both good.
-
exactly it has to be both or nuthin at all
-
I agree to an extent, which is why I don't much like Phish, but if Led Zepellin or Cream had written bad lyrics they would still be two of my faves.
-
The Music is what draws me to it at first; then comes lyrics.A nice musicianship is always good. Eric Clapton- Classical Gas.combine music and lyrics and you're on the billboards! Its why Led Zeppelin is famouse. Other that using Blues and saudering it to another type of genre.I'd show you examples but it probaly wont fit on this forum
-
I don't think a song even needs much for lyrics, so long as the music is good and the lyrics don't clash it. For example, Aqueous Transmission by Incubus has very little for lyrics yet it's one of the most soothing and uplifting songs I've heard.
On the other hand, there's some rap I really like and it's about as devoid of musical expertise as you can get. I listen to it for the message it conveys. Same way with some metal, but sometimes I love listening to it.
They're both important and it depends on how I'm feeling and what I want to listen to. Generally, I'd say that musicality is the most important thing, but what's most important is that everything fits together nicely.

I agree, Zep wrote some awesome lyrics, some of the best I've heard in rock. All I meant was I would have just as much respect for Page, Jones, Bonham and Plant even if their songs had terrible lyrics
-
I would too, I love how Plant sings, his voice is just outstading.I cannot forget any of their rhythm"Once you hear a Zeppelin riff, you cannot forget it" the best riffs are i heard by them- In the Evening-Nobody's fault by mine- All my Love.I got the rhythm in my head all the time.Bron Y Aur is amazingEverytime i pick up my guitar its the song i warm up on, or on Tangerine. These guys are true pioneers with rock.Lots of people say Music died when John Bonham died. Thank god for his son!
-
all my love is awesome, i reccomend black dog, the ocean, over the hills and far away, ramble on, and babe im gonna leave you
-
one of my favorit songs is by nonpoint and they sing it all in spanish. i have no clue wut there saying but it's cool.....
lyrics help make or break a song...at least i think that.
-
Lyrics and music can make or break a song but I can put up with it if either one lacks a little, can't be both though.
-
for me,the lyrics and music are equally important.
-
If you want something with meaning full lyrics and good music. No Quarter all the way.Pink Floyd wrote some good stuff, they were more of a lyrical band. Black Sab. was both.
-
Well to an extent I can put up with good music and bad lyrics to an extent. But if its somthing like lovey duby emo songs that may have some good music the lyrics would drive me insane. I mean I cant listen to music where I wanna go slap the guy who wrote it in the face cus hes a lil bitch.
-
i appreciate great lyrics but the truth of that matter is that one often needs the lyric sheet to follow most of what I listen to. In alot of ways, the screaming voice can be concidered as another instument
-
It's the music. Sometimes the lyrics help tell the story, but it's music that is the language of emotion. Don't ever overlook the instrument too...the tone of the instrument is as the voice of a singer. The right voice for the right song is soooo important. Two guys who do electric guitar tone right (these days...not counting the greats like Jimmy Page) are Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani. I like both...most will only like one or the other, though.
-
In my opinion in order to make a good song both the lyrics and the intrumental must be good. However I feel lyrics are just a lil more important. This is the reason I cant stand hip hop except some select underground artists which actually rap about stuff thats not the same old bullshit.
-
Music is way better than Lyrics id listen to Instrumental Metal if they had it, if you know of any PLEASE TELL ME i have alot of music but im lacking Instrumental ( Metal, Industrial Metal, Nu Metal, MetalCore, Death Metal, Thrash Metal....) ill take any of the above and any more with the same type or close Genre. just gimmy band names if u know of any
