Now that we're done with the political science and history discussion, and now that thor hopefully agrees that the velocity of light can indeed be less than c, we can get back to the topic of pride.SYL:In reply to:One importnat thing to note is that Pride is NOt an intellectual thing, its emotional, and thus intellectual arguments for and against it are somewhat moot. Its like presenting a written essay using science and socialogy to someone informing them why they shouldnt love a particular person or prefer a peach to a plum. Finally, a new idea! So what you're saying is that the sense of pride is driven by emotion or brain wiring (if I understand what you're saying), and arguing about it is like arguing religion. Point taken. I still think it's possible to have a rational discussion about the subject, but it might be in the realm if biochemistry rather than sociology or anthropology.> In its defense however I AM linked to Winston Churchill and Marerat Thatcher by CULTURE. So you see genetics has little to do with it. ... Note that I am not defending pride in ones colour or anything superficial. I did you's the term ethnicity, but the people of my ethnicity share a culture. There are British people who are not Caucausians. There must be at least one who you'd consider worthy of hero status. Would you also feel pride in that person's accomplishments?Keep in mind that in the U.S., there are lots of people of great accomplishment, of many different cultures, ethnicities, colors, etc. Would someone who says their proud of their skin color also be proud to be of Martin Luther King's culture? Or would they not even consider themselves to be of the same culture? I think you're talking about cultural pride, but there are people who specifically talk about "white pride".Europe's cultural pride has led to wars and colonialism. You can see where the U.S.'s cultural pride has led. You would be surprised how many Americans think that the U.S. is better in every way, without even having a good idea what's going on in the rest of the world.

I know what ya mean, I'm from mixed heritage too. I only found out recently tho. All my life I thought that my entire family was from Dublin, but it turns out that one of my grandmothers was born in Cork!!! Everytime I think about it I just feel so... dirty.

I think we have broken a new barrier with your latest post on this thread.Cultural pride... That something I can relate to and understand. The skin color pride, thats whats so damned stupid. white pride, black pride, spanish pride, al that shit can be seperated form cultural pride, in fact I dont even think cultural pride is a bad thing to have.you asked SYL if there was a non caucasion hero from his countrys origins he can relate to and hold up as a hero.Maybe Im ust ignorant of my own US history, but aside from Clara Barton, and Martin Luther King, is there any realy great nonwhit heros you an think of in the US history?I can think of several more recentlyf, and even more if you consider sports heros and people that others admire based on thier contributions to small things, but to really be a "hero" I think it takes more then being able to beat someones ass in the ring, or dink a ball, or jump so high and so far you neary fly.An argument could be made for Colin Powell I suppose.Do any others spring to mind though that are fairly well known, and taught in schools around the country ?im sure if we googled it or asked soley black or hispanics or what not for references to some they would know a few, but as a white US educated citzen do more come to mind with out the aid of outside sources ?all this begs me to ask, Is it that there are not many ? or is it that due to our racist culture, they never made it into the history books and writings that they use to educate the youth of today and yesterday ?

aside from Clara Barton, and Martin Luther King, is there any realy great nonwhit heros you an think of in the US history? Here's a book on the subject: Book of Black Heroes: Scientists, Healers, and InventorsThere are many non-Caucasian Nobel Prize winners from the U.S. Jews have won a bunch; some folks would not include them with "real" Caucasians. There are many non-Caucasian valedictorians every year at the top universities. There are many non-Caucasian physicians doing heroic work. How about athletes? Michael Jordan, Jim Brown, Arthur Ashe, Jackie Robinson, Tiger Woods, Jesse Owens, etc. There are also plenty of black actors and musicians, e.g., Miles Davis and his many predecessors. Jimi Hendrix, the best rock guitarist who ever lived. Dwayne Wade and Shaq.Remember who won led the first Gulf war? The black batallions of WW II were incredibly heroic and effective. There are many important black American inventors, George Washington Carver perhaps the best known. That's just the tip of the iceberg. And that doesn't even include Latins!

Carver ! fucking Carver ! I forgot him.but wiht out googling and with out looking up stuff in books, or including sports heros, how many skip to the top of your head.Aside from that...how many people really know of any ?I had a point, I forgot where i was going with it though Il have to update to this thread when I can recall what the hell I was going to say aside from that outside of sports heros and reasearching, how many peopl eknow any off the top of thier head, Ill be damned what the hell I was thinking, damn ! It was good stuff too, maybe it shall return to me soon...

So are you asking if there are many minorities worthy of hero-ship, are are you pointing out the ignorance of white folks?
-
He was born in Nevis, British West Indies. His parents were European (Scottish and French Huguenot. He looks white to me. Kind of green, actually.
-
I guess it begs the question... would the teacher have been mad if ir was green or blue just because she was hung up on accuracy or was it really the colour black that irked her?
-
I can't answer the question for sure...but you obviously think the answer is related to the title of this thread or you wouldn't have posted it here. Now let's see...hmmmm...black people are not black...they're really brown. Perhaps this story would have been a little less clouded if the child had used a brown crayon instead? As it stands, it could mean what you are out to imply (that the teacher was racist)...but it could also mean that the teacher was angry at the child for spoiling the picture. Who knows the history behind the relationship between the teacher and child in question...there could have been something there as well that might have brought about the reaction. Just not enough info to safely draw any conclusions.

Oh I know there are those worthy of hero status, I was mostly pointing out the ignorance and even more then that the lack of education, of ht white folk.I also was asking about is it a I dont wnat to know for the white folks, or is it a I dont deem it needed to be known, on the part of the educators. We learned about those mentioned, and eli whitney, and a sparse few others. We see the black super stars in sports all the time, I was asking mainly about historical figures, who hada profound effect on the futures lifes.so is it that we are ignorant ? or that the education syustem didnt deem it worthy of teaching to the public schools.and howmany can oneone who isnt a minority, name with out looking it up to find them ?
-
Jeeeez, you went to the same schools I did. I did have a couple of black teachers who made it a point that we at least become a bit familiar with black authors, poets, scientists, politicians, etc. I remember in 7th grade civics class I had to research Edward M. Brooke (fomrer senator from MA) and Gwendolyn Brooks (poet). In 6th grade English we studied George Washington Carver. In college I read Frederick Douglass. I highly recommend his Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, available free here.

lol that makes no sense. I used to color people in anything but white black or brown lol. I get yelled at for drawing goofey faces in my history book. Personally, Alexis de Tocqueville looked great with glasses and eyelashes IMO. It compliments his meaning to write Democracy in America. But unfortunately teachers are so uptight. The donut I drew next to Napolean Bonaparte was pretty messed up so I don't mind that. lol
-
I colourd Lord Francis Drake black once, no harm done. It was back in grade 3 when we were learning about the greatest tactions and explorers. I coloured Jimi Hendrix purple once, now that was a bitching from the black guy you'll never forget!!

Wel I wasnt too sure about your school, being in Florida ( or where ever you grew up at, I only knew of her in Utah.I know we learned jack shit about blacks aside from they wre slaves, now they are not, Lincoln was the president that freed them.We quikly glanced over Clara bartons role, Eli Whitney, and the underground railroad. I learned that they originally came from Africa on slave ships. i learned that there was a entire black company in the civil war. and of course about geroge washington carver. That entire experience of learning was covered in about a week, maybe two.Later on I studied Martin Luther King, but I use studied very loosely, his entire life we summed up in a matter of 2 days or so in US history. I actually learned mor about it from my love of boxing and of Ali, then i ever did in school.Ill make no secret or fight over the fact that im pretty daned ignorant over the major roles of anyone black, aside form those we have discussed, and even those, Im only slightly more then aware of who they were and why they were important.I suppose I have only myself to blame for not knowing mor outside of the classroom and bettering my education on my own, but until recently, I havent really given a shit.In Utah, from my birth till about 4th grae when I met a back kid at school, I didnt even know that blacks existed. My first clue was when I was mae to sit with my parents and watch Alex Haileys Roots, being a young and dumb kid, all that did was teach me the word nigger. Aside from my childhood buddy that was black, whom I may add I still talk to today, up until hurricane katrina brought the refuges to Utah, I have only seen maybe less then 2 dozen back people in my life in this shitty state I live in.fin teh small town I grew up in there was my buddy and by high school there was one other black family living there.I didnt get a real taste of any different cultures until i got old enough to start traveling on my own and headed to the midwest, the northern most section of "Down South" and finally back east.I realize that im the only one to really blame for my ignorance, and Im correcting that now, I thank you for the rccomendations, Il look into them and pul up the link you gave and check that out as well.fRealy though, aside form all of that, what im trying to ascertain, is i grew up in Utah, you in Florida, other people on this board in other places. as far as teh unite states goes, is it like this every place? Are we simply denied the subject of the importance backs played in making th world an this country what it is today? Is it this country as a whole that doesnt give a shit and deem it worthy enough to teach ot the youth or is it a more global problem?Earlier we were talking strictly racial pride, we since have decided that its ok to have cultural pride, but simple race pride is stupid and only shows ignorance. What Im now trying to decide, and I think it has bearing on ths entire thread, or atleast as far as the general US is concerned, is if the US doesnt, or atleast didnt deem them wrothy enough of including in history, or if it was localized to my are of the country. Is it different say in the south where ther is a higher populataion of blacks then here, or is it this way country wide?
-
Wel I wasnt too sure about your school, being in FloridaExcept for the few small things I mentioned, we learned very little about black history. There's less of an excuse for that here, since there is a large black population. With the no-child-left-behind standardized tests having to be passed, nowadays you're lucky if a public school teaches anything beyond math and English.> Are we simply denied the subject of the importance backs played in making th world an this country what it is today?I'm not sure that it's a global problem, but I'm pretty sure it's like that in most American public schools. I don't know what's going on in the private schools. If South Florida is a good example (and it's not), then it's not much better in the South than it is elsewhere.> we since have decided that its ok to have cultural prideI didn't say that it's OK or not OK, but it's an interesting discussion.> but simple race pride is stupidThat's hard to argue with.

my teachers always get really stiff when they talk about slavery or black history. My teacher said before when talking about segragation "besides, how bad would life be without Shantel, Alyssa, and Abi if they weren't in our school" lol she meant it in a nice way... I think. lol
-
OK or not OK to have cultural pride is all relative.I can alteast understand how someone could have pride in thier culture.
