hey guys. ive been coming onto these forums ever since well... tenth or ninth grade? and i have found it to be a wonderful haven where i can ask questions i normally to be honest would not really ask other people directly face to face because of being super shy! though i am still working on trying to be sociable and such well, as of right now i am at this college orientation thing overnight... and i am so apprehensive about college starting in the fall.. i am completely scared, i am already missing my friends and most importantly my family... and i just have a really hard time accepting the fact that i am growing up and that legally as an eighteen year old i am now an adult who is responsible for my own actions..how can i be unafraid of the future? and how can i overcome missing all my friends? especially this one guy who i care for to death...any and all advice is greatly needed and appreciated..

Apprehensive about college

College can be a very frightening experience, but it is one that should be embraced. It is leaving behind the familiar and taking on all kinds of new and exciting experiences. Yes it will be difficult to leave your old friends behind, but you will be having the opportunity to meet so many new ones. This is actually the time when you say goodbye to your childhood where you always had someone watching out for you. That started when you were very young and your parents cared for you--feeding you, keeping you safe, and helping with things like personal hygiene and washing your clothes. Then your teachers were added to care for you while you were away from home-- and making sure that your did your school work. Gradually you did more and more of these things for yourself. You are correct that at eighteen you are legally an adult and now are totally responsible for yourself. You are leaving a known and very familiar life and being allowed to blossom on your own. Get involved at college, whatever your passion is. There is mose likely a club or group for whatever you choose. Take the opportunity to ask your classmates about studying together, or going out for coffee or a soft drink. That's how you meet people. Don't allow yourself to be a prisoner of your dorm room. Many new college students-to-be are feeling the same way you are right now. Your feelings are not uncommon. You just are one of the fortunate ones that can understand them. Embrace the new and you will find it even more exciting (and comfortable) than the old!
