I posted a similar thread recently. This really helped me.It's all over very quickly, it doesn't hurt, and your doctor will give you a quick run-through of what will happen if you ask him/her.Basically, you'll talk a little bit about your medical history and any problems you've had. Then the doctor will leave the room and you'll either take off all of your clothes or just below the belt clothing and lie down under a big paper blanket thing on top of a chair-thing. Leave your socks on.The doctor will come back in and have you put your feet up in these stirrup-like things (sometimes they're metal and cold, you'll want to wear socks!).Then the doctor will do a visual exam, a manual exam to check for abnormalities (they will use their fingers and feel to make sure your ovaries etc. are okay while gently pressing on your abdomen), then insert a speculum with a lubricant on it for an internal visual exam and (depending on if you are sexually active or 18) do a PAP test. It's all over VERY quickly, don't worry.

o god that sounds scary..made my stomach hurt...ive never had that done. i am sexually active too..and im 18..but im just too damn scared to go
-
I'm with you on that oneTo scary for meI'm 26 and have never gone
-
Ladies, please, its not as horrible as you think it is, and its something that HAS to be done. A 10 minute check is nothing to the messing around down there that will happen when you have children or god forbid something is wrong. Don't be scared, its not 'nice' but i bet its far from the dreadful experience you think its going to be.

its just that the thought of somone touching me down there really scares me. ive been molested in the past,so the fact that i know a doctor will be touching me down, really hurts my stomach

Would it help if the doctor were female?
-
yeah i guess so. im just afraid that something is going to be wrong...i have really bad anxiety_,and minor issues really get to me most of the time. i just get so nervous when it comes to doctors, and i know that if i need to get a pap smear i'll be even worse.
-
No no no. It's done really quickly. Just try to focus on something else. And it does need to be done if your 18/sexually active, for the benefit of you and your partner.I had a female doctor and it really eased my worry. It's no big deal. I was terrified that it was going to hurt, but it doesn't. Mostly it's just slight pressure and being in an awkward situation.

It sounds a lot worce than it really is, and it go really fast most of time is just talking to doctor. The first time i went i was totaly freaked but its really not that bad.
-
o..well thanx. ill keep it in mind
-
Yes I'm serious
I am terrified of doctors and really don't want one down there

I agree with Sexpot. I had put off getting a pap for a few years at one point in my life. When I finally went, my pap was abnormal and it turned out I had HGSL (ie. cancer causing cells). They had to be frozen off. I couldn't imagine what that would have developed into if I had put it off for a few more years.

yer that kinda freaks me out 2....im sure i could do it if i really really had to. but yer, doctors do freak me out sumwhat and it sounds awful to me but its alot better to go and know ur ok or let them catch sumthing early then not go, get cirvical caner or sumthing and have to have a hystirectamy(sp?) where they remove ur womb, cervix and sumtimes part of ur vagina...id rather have the creepy exam then go through that cuz i didnt.

Go to a doctor recommended by family or friends. You don't want to go? Suck it up, and go anyways.
-
Well, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's terrified... My family just found out I've never been, and I have to go soon... I'm terrified of doctors (childhood trauma sucks), and I don't like people to see even my bare arms, let alone my insides. Unfortuantely, uterine and cervical problems (cancers, I think, but won't swear on it) run in our family. I'm a grown woman who is about to cry at the thought of even some nice person checking me. sigh Just know you're not alone.

I hate it too. Becase it reduces me to a scared kid. I am33 and when I go its hell or me. I have gone ever sence I was 19. I get intense burning. It feels like I am on fire. It may not be that way for you. I have a learning disability and that may just be making me over sesitive to some types of feelngs. I do not know.I do not mean to scare you. what I do know is there is a better way to deal with this. If you use tampons this will be a better option for you they have this pap test called a femspec and not all dr use this new type of tool(equipment) its like using a tampon. I have not had this type of pap test but I am going to to ask for it. Go to Femspec.com read and see the video and ask the Dr.Ask the Dr if you can see as she is doing this test with a mirror. do not be afrade to ask for a nurse to come in and hold your hand. I was told by a friend the more you see the process and you start to feel in controll over what is happening to you the better. my friend and I think its a fear over loss of controll. I am asking my Dr about this Femspec and also about getting rid of that stupid sheet thing they cover you with( I want to feel like I am in my own room on a hot summer nigh so I can be relaxed about this) and for a mirror so can see. Asked about the femspec its new and I have heard it is like inserting a tapon then the speculum is like blown up in side you. Its made of soft material. Go to femspec.com and see. relax there may be a better option wiith less worry. let the Dr know its you first time and try to relax. I know its hard I try and try with no luck. I have founf though taking 2-3 Ib profin does help with pain some what. Good luck!

I've never heard of anything remotely like a burning sensation happening on a check-up at the OB-GYN. If you have a burning sensation, there is probably something wrong that you need to get checked out anyways. I'm very sorry that you seem to have this burning, but I've never heard of it before, so it must be uncommon. To the OP (and Ashley69 and any others who are going for the first time): I wouldn't worry too much about a special product or a burning sensation. Really, no pain, just slight pressure and being in an uncomfortable situation (no one wants their legs spread to a complete stranger and then be prodded). In most cases, it doesn't hurt, it's just... wierd. Don't worry at all. It'll be over VERY quickly.
