For the last few months I've been planning to move out of home next year. My girlfriend and I have been toying with the idea of moving in together. She is definately moving out of home as well otherwise she'd have to travel between 2-3 hours per day to uni. Up until last week we thought she was going to be getting a student allowance (which you get if your parents earn under a certain amount) but it turns out she won't be getting it. This means her budget is far tighter.Anyway, my dad has been renting an apartment and last month talked to the tenants about me moving in next year (which they were happy about). for a discount rate. I'd really like my girlfriend to move in with me (especially now that it will make a lot of sense financially) but I'm afraid of what my dad may say.I was just wondering what normally happens in terms of rent etc. when a partner moves in. And does there have to be much consultation with the other flatmates, can they veto it etc?

How should I go about this

Usually the lease will set out the rules, which ultimately are at the discretion of the owner. Often everyone who lives in the place must be approved by the owner or his agent, but sometimes sub-letting is allowed. Often a maximum number is specified.I'm not clear if your father owns the apartment or not.If you are able to move in together, you may be charged more rent than if it were just the one of you. How you split up paying it is up to you, but equal shares is usually best for both. All tenants are entitled to what is called "quiet enjoyment" of the property. That means they should be able to live their lives without unreasonable disturbance, which would include overcrowding.

Thanks for that. He does own the property. I just hope he's okay with the idea.
