A question of girls periods from an ignorant guy.

It's a good question.
First period averages usually around 12-13 years old, but it can be earlier or later.
The period happens about every four weeks, though this depends on the girl. It can range from three weeks to eight weeks; it's particularly irregular in younger girls who haven't had it for long. The oral contraceptive pill, as usually taken, makes it every four weeks exactly.
During the four weeks, around the middle of the period (as measured from bleeding to bleeding), an egg is released from one of the ovaries (this is ovulation). The uterus lining is prepared to receive an embryo. If that doesn't happen, the lining eventually breaks down and is discharged through the vagina, and that's the bleeding. It can be red or brown. Bleeding usually runs for five days, with the first three days being heaviest, but again that varies with different women. The bloody discharge is soaked up either by pads worn within underwear, or tampons inserted into the vagina.
In the week before the period (i.e. the bleeding) starts, many women feel tense and irritable; sometimes depressed. Some women feel horniest at the middle of their cycle, when ovulation occurs and they are most fertile. Apparently women find other men more attractive at this time. However some women feel horniest during the period itself.
Sex during the period is possible but messy, and most people avoid it.
