Hey guys I have a question. I really want to get more in shape, but I'm definately far from fat. My ultimate goal is to get a 6 pack and some more muscle(basically what everyone wants). Anyway im about 6'1 151 lbs, so yea im tall and skinny, but my stomach isn't what I'd call flat, but its not like a big gut or anything.. I finally started to take some steps towards it last saturday. I've been eating less and adding healthy foods, eliminated soda, alot less snacking, and more importantly going to the gym. I've been going to the gym every day. I run a mile, and do some lifting. I know its hard to say without pictures or more info (but i believe my body fat is like 12% or something), but how long until I can expect to see the results I want? a few months?

Abs

First and foremost, don't eat less. With your body type, eat more, lots more. Trust me, if you don't you won't gain any muscle and it'll just depress you and cripple your motivation. Eat a lot of carbs too, constantly stuff yourself throughout the day with toast coated with a thick layer of peanut butter. Pasta too, just pump yourself up with carbs. Eat protein too, but what most "tall-skinny" (an ectomorph, google it) people lack is carbs. You may gain a bit of fat, but not much, and you could lose it easily. What routine do you do? Running a mile is pointless, it'll only slow your muscle growth. Don't waste your time with endless crunches and situps either, abs are built in the kitchen, not the gym. Once you reach your desired size simply up your reps and then start a bit of cardio, you'll have abs in no time.As for a time frame? Gym is a lifetime commitment. If you stop, you body will turn to rubbish. If this is your first time doing gym, you could see results within the first week or two. If not, don't stress. If you stick with a good routine and diet, in a month or two you'll definately notice some, and in 6months you'll be significantly stronger.Good luck, with your body type you'll always struggle to gain weight where others just stack it on, but we also tend to be the most defined, with no effort.

Well i may be tall and skinny, but I eat like I weigh 250lbs. Throughout the day I would be constantly eating whatever I could find, but I guess my metabolism isn't what it was like when I was 10. When I said I was eating less, it was mainly about the junk snacking and stuff. But when I do eat, its not like I'm eating a light meal. I have been taking in alot of carbs and protein. Like I said before, I'd rather get rid of the fat on my stomach so I can actually see my abs...any advice for that? I will still continue to workout every day.

any suggestions about getting the abs to show? I'm still going to the gym every day (i didnt go saturday or sunday though, too busy), but I just got back from it right now. I usually warm up by running a mile, then do some lifting. I use some of the machines that target your abs, but first I just need to get rid of the fat I have on my stomach. Also I'm in college, and I know it will be hard, but I'm cutting back on beer. If I do plan on getting drunk (ok i know this is bad but im in college and you get the idea), but would it be better to substitute 2-3 beers with shots of hard alcohol? I dont know about the calorie content in vodka, but it seems like it would be way lower than beer. Ok sorry for the long ramble of things, but am I on the right track(aside from the occasional drinking)?

Vodka is pretty much pure alcohol and water, so its calorie content per gram of alcohol is probably as low as you can get, though most spirits are probably similar. The alcohol itself is still worth a fair number of calories, though.

alright now that I sound like an alcoholic I'd just like to say I only go out on the weekends and have a couple drinks, sometimes nothing at all. Back to the abs. Does it seem like I'm on the right track to being able to actually see my abs from my discription above? I try to eat healthy foods. I practically eliminated soda from my diet, and I dont do alot of snacking. I go to the gym every day and run a mile or 2. If I keep this up, judging by my size (6'1 152, and i think 12 or 13% fat), how long can I expect to see the stomach fat go away and see abs? I know its not very helpful with that discription, but even a rough estimate would be nice. thanks for all your help.

Diet is far more important than excerise when talking about abs. Burn more calories than you consume and you'll have abs in no time. As for a timeframe, there's no way of knowing. Your body, diet, routine and determination are completely different from everyone else, it could take a month to start to see your abs, or a year. Just stick with it and they will show.

If you have the time and can be bothered, you're better off eating 5-6 smaller meals per day, whether you're trying to gain or lose weight.
