I was just watching a video on YouTube of a large group of students storming on stage at Columbia University and attacking a spokesperson for the Minuteman Project. This popped a few questions into my head that I hope someone could answer for me in the most civil way possible. Why do so many Mexicans go into America illegally? How hard is it for them to get a Visa legally? Is it harder for them to gain citizenship than people of other nationalities or are there more of them just because they are right next door?

Mexican Illegal Immigrants

In reply to: or are there more of them just because they are right next door? Not American, but that would be my guess.
-
Yeah, but I just don't understand why so many of them sneak into America illegally.
-
Well I suppose if they could do so legally they would, far less risks and all that. As for the reason they go, better wages.
-
I know why they would want to go to America and that for some reason they can't or possibely choose not to do it legally. My question is why they don't/can't do it legally.

It's difficult to migrate to most industrialised nations - they generally have a lot more people wanting to get in than they want to take. People with advanced qualifications can generally do it fairly easily, but those without special skills can find it impossible. Crossing the border illegally can be a way out of grinding poverty for both themselves and their families. It's not just Mexicans crossing the border. Many come from further south. But since it's the Mexican/US border they have to cross, they are called Mexicans.

It's very difficult for a Mexican to get a visa to come to the U.S., even in he's an academic who wants to come here to present a paper. Otherwise, what would be the sense of Mexicans' paying a cayote thousands of dollars to smuggle them acress the border if they could just buy a airline ticket?

America is a xenophobic and insular society. Why anyone would think that it's the land to escape to is beyond me.

If you're looking to make a (semi-) living wage, those characteristics don't much matter. If a Mexican can make five times the wage he would make in Mexico, he's OK with the fact that most Americans don't read newspapers.
