I suggest you talk it over with an obese person before you jump to conclusions.I think this board would be a better place if folks came to realize that other people's pain is as valid and real as their own.

Well yes they would learn english eventualy BUT there is no reason why they cant take a few english classes before they came. I mean I am sure if you or I decided to educate ourselves in the german education system we would make an effort to learn german to a degree before we went. Tho as somone else said they could have been exchange students which is really also no excuse, the echange students I have seen or knew had made an effort to learn the language to a level they could communicate with others before they came.> "The first thing to understand is that freedom of speech does not exist for students in public schools. You can't get away with wearing a shirt that says "screw the teacher" or "kill the mud people" in school, even if you can on the street (at least in the U.S.)."Aye I agree with that completely, I was saying more how a child calling somone a rasit term like "darky" or somthing similar is just another form of verbal abuse used in schools. Kids like to pick on people for being differant not necicarily because theyre racist, getting police involved in simple name calling is just silly. I never hear of schools calling the police because somone called the disabled kid a name. I remember when I was in school and some kid used to kick me in the nuts all the time and bully me, one day he kicked me in the nuts and I punched him in the face and hit his head on a goal post. The school called my dad and tryed to say it was a "racist" attack (just because the kid was black) fact is he was kicking me in the balls and bullying me for days and I was a young kid defending myself who didnt care if he was black or white just that he was an ass. I think calling kids racist is just so uncalled for and plain sick.

Aye, well I have friends who used to be fat in school and got made fun of for it. My girlfriend used to not eat for 3 days at a time and all sorts of crazy things because she thought she was fat (When she looked VERY VERY thin, to a point people worried about her) just because of the things people said in school. I had to make her promise to stop starving herself even. Youre right in saying its possiable to loose weight but the psycological scars it leaves with people arent nice at all.

We don't know what the circumstances of those students where where they came from. English instruction may not have been available.I've met many adults who studied English where they came from, but could not actually communicate in English until they were here for at least a little while. I studied French for two years, in 9th and 10th grade, and after that I couldn't even communicate in the language. For me, it took a lot longer, and a lot more conversational work, to be able to be able to communicate with somone on the street. If you get into a fight with a black person, it's silly to call it a racial attack, unless there's a pattern of your getting into fights with black people. But society has a special interest in keeping under control racist acts. Some of the laws may be sensless, or applied in a ridiculous way, but there is a (historical) reason that they exist.

Aye true, in the article though it did say that they couldnt speak english. Or at least to an understandable level. In reply to: I studied French for two years, in 9th and 10th grade Ha ha me too, and I dont remember a bit of it. Infact I did 3 years of french. All I remember is donne maui une tete (probrably not even spelled correctly) which means give me head please, funny how you only remmber the silly things . In reply to:If you get into a fight with a black person, it's silly to call it a racial attack, unless there's a pattern of your getting into fights with black people. But society has a special interest in keeping under control racist acts. Some of the laws may be sensless, or applied in a ridiculous way, but there is a (historical) reason that they exist. That is one of the main problems with this country in my opinion. No matter how many laws they apply it will never amend for the past, and it is IMPOSSIABLE to ammend the damage to people racism did because the people who suffered are dead. At the moment some of the laws in this country are verging on discrimination. Mister blair sits on the fence on allot of issues because he doesnt like to get his hands dirty and this country has really gone downhill because of it. My grandfather served in the world war and gets upset because he fought for freedom and yet in a supposidly free country it is repressed.

Here there's more of an emphasis on what people do rather than what they say. You may insult someone's race, but you have to rent them an apartment (if the building is big enough to qualify....at least that's how it works in Massachusetts). On the other hand, there is now the idea of a hostile work environment. Taunting people about their race or religion at work is not accpetable, if management does it, or knows about it but doesn't step in.Freedom of expression does not apply everywhere. If you come into my house and say things I don't like, I can toss you out.

Well thats FUBAR, that girl had all the right and sense in the world to think "gee, They cant talk english, I cant talk____ i guess I'll sit somewhere else" I tend not to sit with Asian people if their talking their own language, not because i have anythign against them, they talk their own language and the language is irritating to me, i dunno why, doesnt mean i have anythign against the people, i just dont wann a listen to their language cause it grates on my brain. Does that make me a racist? nope, it would be racist if i didn't sit with them BECAUSE they were asian and simply that.
-
That's an interesting extrapolation; of course it makes sense for her to leave a group where the other students aren't speaking her language. The problem is, we don't know the whole story.
-
true, maybe she actually thoguht "gawd! asians! damnit! i hate them!" maybe she didnt, who knows, all i know is that reaction was over the top, racist or not
-
Thought it? Maybe she said it. Who knows?
-
also a possability, I'm sure she would deny it to the last. oh well
