Ha, fooled you. Okay, my Norton Internet Security 2006 expired last month and I'm trying to figure out if I should renew it (it got bad reviews from CNET, but good ones from PC Mag) or if I should look somewhere else. I tried the new versions of Trend Micro Internet Security and Zone Alarm Internet Security. Trend Micro is resource hungry, and Zone Alarm slowed down my start up. Should I get another all-in-one program, or look for some freeware to download?
-
What to choose...
-
I suggest sticking with Norton, but as punishment for getting bad reviews, renew it illegally.
-
How can I do that?
-
Just look online for a software crack.
You could download the Norton Internet Security 2006 with the crack HERE. The only problem is that you have to turn off Live Update and download the definition updates manually.
And if you want to do it legally or illegally, you have a lot of choices.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 6.0.0.303
In reply to:
Kaspersky(r) Anti-Virus 6.0 is simple to install and set up, yet offers advanced users a range of versatile settings for fine-tuning the program. The program integrates seamlessly with the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems and is fully compatible with other security programs (for example, firewalls).
Key Features
Antivirus protection
Protection for email. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 scans email traffic for viruses according to the protocol via which it is sent (POP3, IMAP and NNTP for incoming mail and SMTP for outgoing mail) on any mail program, while plug-ins and treatment for viruses in Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express mail databases are offered.
Scanning of Internet traffic. All HTTP Internet traffic is scanned for viruses in real-time, ensuring that infected objects are not saved to the computer's hard disk.
Protection for file systems. Individual files, catalogues and disks can be designated for antivirus scanning. Users can limit antivirus scanning to critical areas of the operating system and startup objects to ensure that attention is focused on the most vulnerable areas of the system.
Proactive protection
Control over changes in the file system. With Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 it is possible to compile lists of applications, the component structure of which will be controlled, thus helping to prevent malicious programs from undermining the integrity of the application.
Monitors processes in the memory. The product monitors the activity of programs and processes that have been launched in the computer's memory and, at the same time, warns users of any dangerous, suspicious or hidden processes (that is, rootkits), and of unauthorized changes in routine processes.
Monitors changes in the operating system registry. The application controls the status of the system registry and notifies users of any suspicious objects or attempts to create hidden keys in the registry.
Blocks dangerous macros. Proactive protection affords control over the operation of macros based on Visual Basic for Applications in Microsoft Office documents and blocks dangerous macro-commands from being executed.
System restore. The system can be restored after malicious activity. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 can roll back any changes made to the system by malicious programs.
Fast operating speeds
Technology for accelerated antivirus scanning. iSwift and iChecker technology make it possible to limit scanning to new and modified files, or to limit scanning to potentially dangerous objects only. Antivirus scanning can be suspended during times of increased user activity to ensure that your computer's resources are free for your use.
Reduced update sizes. The size of updates downloaded to users' PC has been reduced almost 10 times (now amounting to several tens of kilobytes) in Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0, making our updates virtually instant.

Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro
In reply to:
Being online is fraught with dangers: Internet worms, spyware agents, Trojan horses, hijackers and more can wreak havoc, causing anything from slow performance to system crashes to information leaks to full-blown identity theft. To provide you with the kind of protection you need in these days of cyber thieves and online extortionists, your firewall must be able to monitor all inbound and outbound traffic and protect you from any unauthorized intrusion by rendering your PC invisible to anything that you haven't authorized to see it.
Outpost Firewall Pro Benefits
Protection against spyware and identity theft
New anti-spyware capabilities protect your computer against spyware and identity theft. Spyware cannot enter, activate on or transmit information out of computers protected by Outpost 4.0. And the ID Block feature lets you select specific items of personal information, for example bank account numbers, and block that information from ever leaving the PC. Even if you choose to disable spyware protection during PC-intensive tasks, your PC will still be protected --- all new requests for connections must be verified as spyware-free before being allowed to proceed.

Good lord, that long post must mean that you have something very important to do. Impressive, though.
-
I installed Virtual PC on my machine and browse the internet using it... I have no security set up on it and viruses, for some reason, don't infect it. I run the freeware of AVG on the non-virtual machine.
-
My school now gives out the corporate edition of Symantec's Antivirus. I'm using that now. Should I use XP firewall or download one? If I should download one, which one should I choose?
-
I'm getting a free copy of Vista Home Edition in December, all legal and everything.
This has no relevance to the conversation, but I rule!
-
AVG free edition has worked well and solidly for me for more 5 years
-
If you have XP, you should upgrade to SP2. This will give you windows firewall. If you don't want windows firewall to mess with your system, then you can disable it. Same with the pop-up blocker. But SP2 has quite a few patches you may want applied to your system. As far as non-MS firewalls, I personally like McAfee's firewall. EDIT: though, I would be hesitatnt to install McAfee firewall on a machine that is running Norton. The two companies don't like each other.
-
I've been running Trend Micro PC-cillin on my laptop with XP for the past year and I have never had any issues with viruses or the program acting up. My PC on the other hand was a complete bitch when running Norton 2006 and just really annoying with Zone Alarm.
-
I wish there was a way to get the 2006 version of PC-cillin. I've tried the 2007 version, and it sucks. Resource hog.
-
My dad wants to put a new copy of Internet Security(Norton) on my laptop, but I have a bad feeling all that is going to do is slow everything down even more than it already is. Plus, I don't use Windows much anymore, so it really wouldnt be worth it. ZoneAlarm seems to work fine for me at the moment.
-
The new Norton hasn't gotten good ratings. I wouldn't recommend it.
-
It's packed full of so much extra stuff it slows down the computer's performance more than is necessary. It has popups every bloody minute for this and that for the first little while. There are other programs that do the same thing and are much more hassle free and don't integrate themselves into absolutely every function of your computer (therefore slowing it down).
-
What program are you exactly talking about? Norton?
-
Yes he is.
