okay a short history... I've always had problems with my ears, had several grommets put in and was meant to have a skin graft to create a new eardrum, as both of mine have been perforated since I was about 3.About 6 weeks ago I guessed I might have got an ear infection (I was getting a little pain in my jaw - I have a really high pain threshold so I don't notice when things hurt usually...) but it kinda went away... then about 3 1/2 weeks ago it was back with a vengeance and causing me real problems, so I went to the doctors. He gave me amoxicillin to try and get rid of it, and also took a swab to be tested because it looked pretty bad. After 8 days the doctor rang my house to get me to come and collect a prescription for cephelaxin, because they'd given me the wrong antibiotics for the bacteria or something.Yesterday I was meant to be finishing my course but my ear felt worse, and was really blocked and stuff coming out of it (because it's perforated.. had been coming out a little all along..) so I got an emergency appointment, and he's now prescribed me ciprofloxacin....so now here is my problem. All day, since about 11am, my heart has been beating really hard and quick every 10 - 20 mins or so for about 4 beats, no pain or anything with any other part of my body. I don't know if this is caused from the antibiotics or what... I just rang the out of hours patient line and they recommended going to emergency room and getting an ecg, but I don't really fancy sitting there all night waiting for it when I'm absolutely shattered... so I think I'll be going tomorrow morning instead if it is still happening.Has anyone had any experience of this before? Do you think it could be a side effect ? Is it dangerous???

Antibiotics and weirdness....

Cipro is a heavy duty antibiotic. One of the side effects I do know of, and I double checked on this site:http://www.utdol.com/utd/content/topic.do?topicKey=pat_drug/45250&type=A&selectedTitle=2~108is a rapid heartbeat. Found this quote in the link I provided: "Limit caffeine (for example, tea, coffee, cola) and chocolate intake. Use with this medicine may cause nervousness, shakiness, and fast heartbeat."However, if your arm or hand is feeling numb I would go to the ER.

Yes, it can potentiate the effect of caffeine, and caffeine can cause fast or irregular heartbeat. However an allergy to ciprofloxacin can in itself cause irregular heartbeat. If you're not taking much caffeine it suggests an allergy, and it should be taken seriously.

Thanks you two. I don't drink / eat anything with caffeine in, and the only chocolate thing I had in the past two days was a small piece of chocolate cake. I'm off to the doctors this morning! It's been beating strangely for nearly the past 24 hours. Ack...

Well they just rang me and told me I'm having an ECG there lol. Ah well sigh I'll update in a bit.... Off to be prodded now
-
Okay! An update. They did an ecg on me, said it looked normal (mainly because the damn thing was only happening every 10 - 15mins when I got there..) but he changed my tablets... now I'm on Cefuroxime 250mg to see if it stops with that... and he's also said that if it doesn't stop by 12pm tomorrow I have to have a 24hour ecg... ack!!! how the hell do they do a 24hour one????!
-
They would probably hook you up to a Holter Monitor. They record all the activity going on with your heart. It works great for monitoring arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are sometimes hard to find in a short amount of time like with an ECG, so doctors recommend the Holter to monitor for 24 or more hours. And you do not have to be admitted to the hospital, you can where the monitor home and bring it back the next day.

Ooh good, didn't fancy staying there for that long ah well, I'll see how it goes tomorrow! Thanks
