MarijuanaWhat are people's views on the legalisation of cannabis for both medicinal and recreational use? Personally, I'm all for it. Why? Because using cannabis is less dangerous than both tobacco and alcohol in social harms, physical harm and addiction. Cannabis is less likely to cause emphysema or cancer than tobacco. It is unlikely to cause birth defects or developmental delays in the children of users. The University of California Los Angeles did a study and found that even heavy cannabis smokers do not increase their risk for lung cancer. There has never been a single confirmed casualty reported as a direct result of cannabis use. It is a safer recreational drug than smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol, yet it is illegal in most countries.

recreational use will always get caught up in pollitics. The pollitical objections to medical use are stupid, partisan, cruel, selfish and without presindence

I have never understood the objection to medical use. I can see a possible objection to people who smoke it in the European style where they mix the marijuana with tabacco, but its a horrible point since tobacco is perfectly legal.

are these for a report?

My mom was prescribed marinol to help her appetite after she was treated for cancer. When she found out what was in it, she refused to take it. There was no convincing here otherwiss. That was about $160 down the drain. And then my father threw it out. (!)

This is a story I heard in an interview with Seth Mcfarlane (creator of Family Guy). I'm not certain how true it is.The main reason it is illegal is because back in the 30's William Randolph Hearst owned a lot of newspapers and owned the paper mills that printed the paper. Hemp (which of course is not exactly the same thing as marijuana but is commonly associated and lumped together with it) was competing with his paper production so he rallied his friends in power (government) and finally made it illegal in 1937. I don't think a lot of people know this. The interesting part is that when the case was originally brought before congress the prosecutor (Anslinger) claimed that it caused violence, attacks, delerium, death and was only used by poor black people (jazz musicians I believe). When the topic came back up in the 50's the same guy (Anslinger) told congress a totally different story. Now his tale said that it should be illegal because it caused mellowness and apathy. He said the communists would try to use it against our youth in a bid to corrupt America.

And that is the way I would like to see the medical thing go. No smoking it and buying it in little shanties, hidden from the public eye. Here in Cali, you can get a script, but that doesn't mean that you won't get in trouble for it. I have tried, aleve, asprin, ibuphropen, and othe nsaids...some allergies, some inefective for pain...hydrocodone, helps, but is addictive, and more of a speed like effect, so I injure myself worse. At least the pot put me to sleep, and killed the pain. An effect that alcohol has as well, but more toxic!

It's also an effective anti-emetic (anti-barf) drug for some people, and it doesn't have the side effects that some of the drugs have. The common anti-emetics don't even work well for some people. The idea that the government regulates what drugs someone who has a terminal illness can take is beyond silly, but the government is afraid of losing even more control over the marijuana trade. News to the governement: you have almost no control over the marijuana trade, and your cracking down on it has led to an explosion in cocaine imports. The government also worries that marijuana with become more legitimate in the eyes of the public at large if marijuana is made legal for medical purposes. It's all very silly, and very anti-libertarian.
