Ok, maybe someone can help me out here. I use limewire to download all my stuff, and sometimes when its done it doesnt play...(I get the sound and a weird thing with a bunch of colors). I think it may be the codec, but I dont even know what a codec is. If someone could help me that would be great.

use I-TUNESif have to paid for the music but it is good

The files may just be damaged. What kinds of files are you downloading, and what are you using to play them?

To find this thread, you can go to your new thread, which was summarily locked, and click on the link, bringing you here. Or you could just go to your home page (Click on your user name at the left), and then go to the bottom and click on Show all user's posts. Or you could do a search on, for instance, codec.

my mpg files are working good, cant get avi's to work....I use windows media player
-
If youre having issues playing .avi's, it could be because they are DivX files ( DivX site ) Try that

Doesn't Windows Media Player let you know when it needs a codec that it can't find, rather than try to play the file with the wrong codec?
-
it kinda does both. it'll tell you if the file extension doesn't match the file and ask you if you want to go ahead. But it also tells you if it can't find the codec.
BTW, everytime I've downloaded Quicktime, the fucker has taken over all my media, no matter what I tell it to do. Does Apple have such an inferiority complex that it's media player is so aggressive? -
During installation, QuickTime asks whether it should be the default for everything. Just say no.Go to Edit --> Preferences --> QuickTime Preferences, and click on the File Types tab. There you have a lot of choices over what QuickTime deals with.

aint that easy my friend... it's insidious

I seem to have beat it into submission. I let it deal with things like .mov, .aiff, and some oddball types. I'm also running iTunes.
RealPlayer is even more of a pain. I use it as a default for .mp3 files...old habit. It seems much less bulky than iTunes. I just use iTunes to manage podcasts and deal with the iPod.

it just always seemed that there was a Q plugin hiding, waiting, plotting... dirty little verman

Its never asked me to download a divx codec. Always just says it cant play the file. There should be a divx codec for windows media player on the divx site though.
