More recently than that Bobs, my aunt got the living shite kicked out of her by the nuns in the late 70's. I was already born at that time, and some of the industrial schools didn’t close till the mid 80’s. When people remember the brutality that went on in this country they tend to think in near ancient terms; it wasn’t as far fucking back as some people would like to believe.

Just a Reminder, be happy

Well the Catholic church's position in our government was stronger 30 years ago than any religion probably has been in America for well over a century. They controlled so much stuff here. Contraception was only made available in Ireland in the 80s because the Catholic church was against it.

Well I talk about the 60s and 70s because those are the tails that I ear about from my family. My oldest cousin is 30 and he never experienced any of it, so I can only speak of events before his time.

One of my aunts got contraception here in the early 70's, well before it was legal; it was a Jewish doctor who gave it to her. Apparently he was a very kind and decent man and my aunt was up the walls not to have any more kids, so he helped her. She put all her friends onto him and he was handing out the pill like smarties afterwards so she says, ha ha, but the thing was, in those days, you'd be fucking scandalised for life if anyone found out you were on the pill, so it was all secrecy and lies. What a desperate shameful way to live; thank God we're coming into 2007!
