i used to be on yasmin, but it made me get really intense mood swings to the point where i almost went on bi-polar medication.. luckily, i found out it was from my pills.. and since then, i haven't been on any form.. i recently went to my gynocologist and he gave me loestrin but told me to wait until i get my period to start.. problem is that sometimes it takes me up to 7 months to get it, and i want to get on my new bc now. i just started a new relationship with someone a few months ago and want to make sure we are extra-protected (i used condoms as well as bc usually).. i also would like to know when i'll get the dreaded monthly visitor, as it always pops up at inopportune times. anyway, my question is this: i still have some pills left over from my old bc (yasmin).. i know if i take 2 i can force my period to start.. is this safe to do this one time in order to start taking my new loestrin birth control? its inevitable that someone ask, but i know i'm not pregnant.

The pills you are talking about from the old set are placebos. They won't make your period start. They don't do anything other than give you a pill to take when you stop taking the active pills, so you stay in the habit of taking a pill every day at the same time.
It's not a hard-and-fast rule that you need to start b/c at your period. You should have told him how irregular your periods are. You need to contact your doctor and discuss it; he will probably tell you to just go ahead and start taking them.

first off, thanks for the quick reply.. i know about the placebo pills, i'm talking about an actual full pack.. i have one left because i stopped taking it because of the effects it had on me before i started my newest pack. and as far as telling him about my irregular period, he knows. i've been seeing the same gyno for 3 years, and he even mentioned me not getting it for a few months previously.. i usually get 2 or 3 a year when i'm not on any form of bc.. my question is, will it mess up my system if i take a couple pills from my previous pack to start my period instead of waiting for it to naturally happen? i want to do this in order to start my new form of bc.. i understand that i can start taking the new pills at any time, but is it advisable? i always heard it was best to wait for your period... ?

Those are good questions, and they should be directed to your gynecologist. He would know for sure.As far as when you start a new pack, doctors generally tell you to wait for your period so that you don't change the timing of your period. There is nothing sacred about the day of the month your period falls on, unless it's a matter of convenience for you. You should be able to start the new stuff right away. But as I said, I'd check with the doctor. Can't you call him tomorrow? You don't need to make an in-person appointment.

thanks! i think i will call him tomorrow as a matter of fact.. hopefully he will let me just start taking my new bc.

I expect that he will. Don't forget to ask him how long you need to wait before it's safe to have sex without having to uses a barrier method (i.e., a condom). There are reasons you might still want to use a condom along with b/c, but that's another story.

yeah, i generally use both bc and a condom to be extra safe.. thanks!
