Protein powder
-
I'm not sure what it is but have you tried searching it on google? xD
-
It's just protein. It's not a drug or anything, it is quite literally just another varity of food which carries an extremely high protein content.

protein powder is just what km said, you mix it with water and it makes a beverage with a good amount of protein (generally 20-25 grams, high end such as myoplex has 40+) with minimal fat and carbs. you need approximately 1.1-1.3 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight to maintain muscle, and more than that to build, so if you can get a few grams here and there it is worth it. however, a can of tuna fish (~15 g per serving, about 33 per can) is around a dollar and gives you the same nutrient, minus the cholesterol powders substantially contain. i could go on and on but search for whey protein online if you are a lifter and buy ON whey.

so would the powder help me gain muscle mass?
-
Short answer, yes, but only if you're accompanying it with a good exercise routine. If you eat the powder and sit on your arse, that arse is about the only thing that will grow.
-
Is there any reason why one shouldn't take the protein instead in the form of steaks?
-
the average 3 oz steak is loaded with protein but most fear the accompanying saturated fat. steak is a great food and if you eat about 6 oz a day (2 small servings or 1 "american" serving, not that much actually) you get about 50 grams of protein, a great taste and only 18 grams of fat and 6 of saturated. for around 350 calories, not a bad bet at all. but god forbid anyone would get off the bench and run once in a while, theyd rather drink some nasty drink.

I would say steak is better, but far more expensive and difficult to prepare. A protien shake is generally used as a meal replacement for people who can't prepare 6 or 7 meals a day.

I use muscle milk after every work out, it helps me recover quicker.
