So, I gave blood today, for the first time... And I put ice on my arm, because they said it would probably bruise, but it's been a couple of hours, and right now there is this really dark maroonish blueish splotch about an inch from where they stuck me, and it's pretty swollen and bruised all up and down my arm. They gave me a number to call, but the office is close right now... I was just wondering if this was normal, I tried to check on the internet, and the Red Cross website really didn't have anything...

Blood Donation Problem?
-
When I first donated blood, the skin around the injection site was colored (it was yellow, blue, and purple). It didn't really hurt or anything, but it didn't swell. I don't remember exactly, probably in about 2-3 days, the odd colors were fading. I didn't put any ice on it though.I would say what's happening to you is fine and wait a few days. But you said it was all over your arm. So, in that case, I would call the number.

I'm a blood test junkie (and also like donating blood :D), I've had slight bruising (brownish/yellow colour) but that is usually gone in a day or two

a huge painful bruise on your arm can be normal. I donate blood fairly routinely, and see lots of people with different bruises. Sometimes when the pierce the vein through, it will bruise all the way up your bicep. It will be tender for a while, anywhere from a day to a week. It's just like a bruise anywhere else, some are worse than others, and some people's bodies deal with them better.I wouldn't worry about it. If it isn't ANY better by Monday, I would ask someone.

I donate quite a bit also. I have had lots of bruising and soreness. How is your arm today?
-
Sort of yellow, but there's lots of purple, and there's still blood pooling in this one spot on my arm, about an area of 2 cm squared...
-
What do you mean by pooling? it seems as though the puncture in the vein might have opened.. but it should have healed by now.

Um, like a really dark maroon splotch, and you know how bruises don't really have sharp lines, they kind of fade out? This doesn't do that, it has clear borders. Maybe I can find something like it on the internet...http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcbeth/255801938/Like that, except not as big, and I have a different colored bruise around it, and I don't have that bright red spot that they have...

When my friend had her vein totally pierced on accident, her bruise didn't go away for nearly two weeks. I think you're still fine. Ask a nurse or Doc you know if you're a little worried, but I'd say you're fine. I'm not a professional or anything, but my mother's been a nurse for years and I've donated blood about every 4 months for 3 years, on top of volunteering on the off months.
