What do you think? Should they have the right to get married?

Brother and sister fight incest law in Germany
-
No, if for nothing else but genetic reasons. We're supposed to be hard-wired NOT to mate with kin so as to prevent a host of genetic diseases and defects which are much more likely the deeper inbreeding becomes. (read into puppy mills)Saying that the courts are violating their sexual freedom is as preposterous as what I've heard child molesters say about their cases too.
-
No, its against the laws of nature. Just look at lions, when a male cub reaches a certain age they throw him out of the pack to stop him from mating with his sisters!
Since they've already had kids its too late to save their genetic line, but by allowing them to get married they would be opening the floodgates for relationships like this all over the world.
-
No, if for nothing else but genetic reasons. What if one or both of them were sterile, and could not produce offspring? Should they be allowed to adopt children? Maybe that would satisfy the conservatives' saying that a child needs a father and a mother (which a homosexual couple can't provide). They'd have, under one roof, a father, mother, uncle and aunt -- a veritable village.

It does bring an intresting point to mind, Why do we have a problem with it? in ancient times it was common place, some of the greatest names in history married their relatives

It's impossible for any couple, related or not, to have absolutely no possibility of having a retarded child. The probability of expression of bad recessive genes is certainly higher with a brother/sister pair, though it is nothing like as high as people think - in fact, it's remarkably low. Zoos regularly mate brothers and sisters (Durrell's zoo of endangered species does it all the time) and hardly ever have any observable problem. It's rather unfair to blame puppy farms for inbreeding. The real inbreeders are the pedigree show breeders. To retain desired characteristics they regularly mate sons with mothers or daughters with fathers, and carry that through several generations.

there was an episode on the show HOUSE sort of like that except they weren't fighting a law lol. This guy and this girl were in an interracial marriage and after an incident in a store where the girl was almost raped she had to rush to the hospital because she was spazzing out and then the same thing happened to him. and they had this serious condition and they couldn't figure out what it was until they found out that it was because they were brother and sister. it was so freaky. but I love that show.

It reminds me of the Brady Bunch move....Greg and Marcia were really into each other...but they were step siblings.
-
I really don't know what I think about that. I was reading about it the other day in the newspaper... I think that it's not so bad because they didn't grow up together, so have never viewed one another as brother and sister.. but to go ahead with the relationship and have kids together even though they are aware that they're related shouldn't happen. Ahhh my brain is full of contradictions

If I remember my livestock genetics class it generally takes several successive generations (depending on how closely related the pair are, I think it was 3 or so generations of generationally repeated brother-sister couplings) of inbreeding for undesirable genetic traits to show up. Most traits of first generation couplings tend to produce only the same innocuous physical traits of the parents. I can't imagine any reason it would be different for human beings. There are inbred people around here that live on the river. What most would call mildly retarded, seems to me, has more to do with impoverished ignorance, lack of hygiene, lack of any kind of medical care and faith inspired fear of the world outside their community. That generational fear has produced one or two severally retarded kids, I know of but I don't know that it's due to inbreeding, out of a community of about 30 or 40 (that's just a guess at the size of the community, I really have no idea the size and I don't know how much they travel to like communities along the river for new blood but I know they do).

As long as they use birth control, i really dont see any problem with incest. why shouldnt family members be able to be in love?
but to answer the question, no, i dont think they should be allowed to get married, because they are willingly bringing children into the world who may have to go through the hard, painful life of being mentaly challenged.

What about the ones who LIVE IN A VAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER !?
-
they are willingly bringing children into the world who may have to go through the hard, painful life of being mentaly challenged. As Ineligible said above, the risk of mental retardation is not much higher for the offspring of siblings than it would be for the offspring of a random couple.

They'll become motivational speakers.
How did your post wind up above mine (in the non-threaded view) when I _just_beat you?
