I just found THIS video on YouTube and I was amazed!
If Americans ever sit around and wonder why the standards in their schools are getting so low, this might be a hint.
Is this how you learnt Maths?

Well, we're doomed...That second method was totally bollocks. I'm probably one of the worst people here to do math; but that was a stunning display of stupidity gone wild. Our kids are done for.
I couldn't believe how much longer the new improved method actually took
I personally haven't encountered any of the nearby school systems to be teaching these other methods. One of the things I am involved in is education of our children, and I don't see how not teaching the original algorithm will help students. I can tell you that if I find any of the nearby school systems to be implementing this in their main curriculum, I'll be more than happy to present this information to Board of Education members. At first, they'll just think I'm a cocky 20 year old. Hahah. Thanks for the video. I've heard about that video before.
another example of how we are fucking our childern
lol. No pun intended I hope.
I learned multiplication by using the first method. If anyone tried to teach any child the second method, they wouldn't be doing a good job of teaching because they'll confuse the students.
thats just stupid. why fix something that isnt broken?!! the way math used to be tought was fine.there is no reason for all these "new" methods to even exist. bullshit.
In it's defense, I did recognize a few of those tricks. When learning math, I tend to create my own way of calculating it out. I've always been a math person and different strategies jsut came naturally to me. I never wrote it down on a paper that was going to be turned in to the teacher and the only time I didn't do it in my head is when I was teaching a fellow classmate how to solve something. My opinion is they should teach the original way and let students use it. Then, if the teacher chooses to, give them an alternative method. When teaching my classmates, I always stressed the original algorithm. If they still couldn't understand it, I would give them an alternative way to solve it that would THEN make the original algorithm clear as to how it works. This is all in the higher algebras more than anything though. But even in basic math I came up with my own formulas.
i completely agree there hunni
This is a really old method this woman is teachingIt had a brief outing when I was a kid, and seems to resurface every decade or soThe ONE little thing in its favour is that it lays out the calculation to explain WHY 12 x 12 = 144The big thing against it is its TOO BLOODY SLOWIt should probably be shown once as an introduction to mathIt's a similar problem now with the calculatorThe answer is correct, but the kid doesn't know why
my math Teacher is awsome, he uploaded like a 100 video's onto youtube, i cant remember what to search for, I'll tell ya all tomorrow
I usually use the 2nd method when doing things like that in my head. But for doing it on paper that just complicates things. Not only that but she's is so bloody boring, I couldn't imagine sitting through a class of that. I'd be far better off teaching myself from a textbook or website.Really, showing different methods isn't a bad thing, because different ways work better for different people.
