Yes, they are really considering this Only in Georgia...What do you think? Also, there is a debate about whether the government, whether state of national, should apologize for slavery? Should the government apologize?

Confederate history month

It may be a nice formality for the American government (or any other governments involved) to apologise to the African nations where slave traders murdered and pillaged for their captives, for America's endorsing of the trade in the past. But to apologise to all the African Americans for what was done to their ancestors? Seems rather pointless.

Quote:But to apologise to all the African Americans for what was done to their ancestors? Seems rather pointless. yeah a little bit, but i believe they were also asking for apologies in regards to the segregation laws which seems pretty darn reasonableas for the confederate history month, plain crap, it wouldnt be as bad if the ones pushing for it didnt blatantly reject apoligizing but even then, why praise people who held something so wrong ,as their divine right or whatnot.

That's part of it, but I don't see what's the problem with apologizing for it. We apologized to the descendents of Japanese-Americans who were rounded up during WWII and to Holocaust victims, but we can't apologize the African-American descendents of slavery and the Jim Crow system. Seems pretty fishy to me.
-
why did we apoligize to holocaust victims? (yes thats an honest question im not saying "why the fuck!?") and i dont have a problem with apoligizing just that what can it really do?
-
Yah i can understand apologizing for the stuff they did in the 60's and stuff.... but not to much for the slavery... i mean it was a horrible thing to do.. but what do you think the black community would say if the goverment did apologize?
-
It's a tough thing. Although a current administration my not be responsible for wrongs done in the past, a nation must take responsibility for it's past. Not for ever but they need to stand up
-
Haha -- we don't have to apologize.
We didn't apologize to the Chinese tho(So they say).
But we did to the Japanese.
Norway, Sweden, Finland, Romania, Hungary and Ukraine don't have to apologize for Slavery  Last time I checked, they're all white.

another insightful post from the resident genius

We? Aren't you Canadian?
-
Yes -- We didn't have slavery here. Never did. I'm just saying, that's the good thing here.--Oh yea. America should apologize. And at least the States that had slavery to pay compensation.

Is the sarcasm why your wife left you?

Dude...that was fucking uncalled for. Do you get some kind of enjoyment out of saying that kind of shit to people?

I dont care how long ago it was, it still deserves a recognition and an apology should be said.

Both of you stop it.

pfft... he started it

Damn, thanks for hijacking my thread. LosersTo those who say that we shouldn't apologize: What good it would do? What good did it do us to apologize to the Japanese-Americans and their offsprings? Honestly, I think Americans like to point out the bad things other countries have done to their own people, but when it comes to our dirt, we like to pretend like it never happened and that we are all healed over what happened in the past. Seriously, what's the big deal about apologizing? What's so wrong about it? Granted that many people's ancestors in this country didn't own slaves. However, the white people from each generation after slavery (even before slavery) have greatly benefited from the segregated, racist, classist, sexist system has been put in place by our government.

The government could use up an (x amount) of hours in an apology session over things the U.S. has done over the years that the current majority deems to be wrong, but I'm not sure I would personally consider that using their time wisely.Regarding confederate history month, I disagree with confederate history month just as I disagree with black history month.I honestly don't know, so I'm asking. Are there any other countries in the world that designate a whole month toward a historical event?Even the Earth only gets a day. chuckle Get it... Earth Day.

They wouldn't have to use up any money. They could designate it as a non-binding resolution, which is self-explanatory. So, the idea that tax dollars would be wasted is a complete cop out.As for confederate history month, it's ironic that a few good ol boys are wanting to celebrate the treasonistic (is that even a word, lol) activities of the Confederacy.Quote:Designating April of each year as Confederate History and Heritage Month; urging schools to commemorate the time of Southern independence; designating the John B. Gordon statue on the state capitol building grounds as Georgia´s Confederate Memorial; and for other purposes. Here's a full description of the bill. Commemorating Southern "independence?" That's practically yelling from the roof top that many in the South aren't over the Civil War.
