A bit of a hypothetical situation for you:You're with a friend whom you've loved for years, you'd even go as far as saying that you're "in love", if only you knew what that really meant. Your friend knows how you feel, it has come up many times and has caused quite a hassle between the two of you in the past. You know that your friend once had feelings for you too, but now they refuse to say. Now, while the two of you lie beside each other having a heart-to-heart conversation, you mention that you are still holding on to the chance that the two of you will someday be together, no matter how slim or seemingly unlikely it is. And your friend responds, "You know that will never happen, right?" Would you agree that this is a definite answer?Fast-forward 2 days to an online conversation with this friend, and it goes a little something like this:Friend - May I ask you a few questions? You - Of course.Friend - You do regard us as just friends, don't you?You - Very good friends, yes.Friend - Well, you're not going to try anything, are you?You - No, the words "You know that will never happen, right?" are very clear.Friend - It's more like "I'm going to give up and I don't want anyone trying to get near me and getting hurt."You - Well that's rather silly, giving up on the whole thing because someone might get hurt.Friend - OK, well it's more like "I'm giving up and I'll rip your throat out if you dare try and stir my emotions". Not you specifically. Is it just me or did the friend just remove the unwanted, but definitive answer?Any views on this "hypothetical" situation would be great!

Yes, I think the friend did.

The phrase "clutching at straws" seems to spring to mind here.
Whilst the exact answer you refer to were not said, words to the effect of it were. Sounds like a lost cause to me.

Hmm, thats what I thought. How annoying!

Oh sorry, I suppose I wasn't too clear. "You" are a guy and the friend is a girl. I didn't want to specify genders so it could be left open for everyone to be able to put themselves into the position.
