Ello loves! I was just in a pretty intense debate with my fella about over weight people, who consistently over eat and refuse to do anything about it. One of us thinks that it's an incredibly selfish and low-will power move, and the other believes it's a persons prerogative to eat and spend as they wish on money. The question put forth, Imagine the world with 6.5 Billion mama Grapes, that'd be awful for hundreds of reasons, and right now with the starvation rate in third world countries, are the Momma Grapes of the world really 'weighing' in on a Global problem, or at least being wasteful and selfish about their refusal to do anything about it (this all started after I read an article to him about Old Navy Phasing out Plus Sized clothes). What's your take?

Wastefullness, or Opting for it.
-
Well, if someone is happy being bigger, and doesnt wanna change that.. all the power to them.

Well, there have been reports that unhealthy and/or overweight people do drive up health insurance rates. As far as "Momma Grapes" being selfish and wasteful about not doing anything about their weight, I believe you can't really put the finger squarely on them. While they do take part of the blame by being gluttons and irresponsible in their decisions, living in excess is a part of our culture. Americans and Westerners in general love decadence and wastefulness.

In addition to what others have said, I feel quite strongly that the things we put in our food here in the US, as well as the food itself in some cases (like processed carbs that jack up our glycemic index), make it very easy to put on weight and difficult to lose it. MSG, for one, has been shown to make the body tend to gain weight...and you'd be surprised at what percentage of our processed food it's found in. Just check the labels out next time you go to the supermarket.

Well said Krystal.
And let's not forget the whole issue of food addictions.
I really have a hard time believing that obese people like being that way.
