Well your dog was very lucky too... chocolate releases a chemical in the body of many/most dogs that is toxic and it can kill them. Just like large amounts of grapes can kill a dog, for some reason it's just as toxic to them as chocolate can be. My dog loves grapes, and she can eat them in moderation but I only allow that from time to time because I read an artical on the effects of grapes and a dogs digestive system. If I can find it I'll post it.

my lab/shepard used to find and eat foil coverd choc easter eggs all the time (all the time at easter that is). Also loved grapes and peanuts.I hear licorice is toxic for your pet rat.until I meet someone with a dead pet, I don't buy it.Now we know that Chinese wheat gluton isn't good for the pets... so tell me this; why does north America, the largest source of wheat in the world, buy wheat products from China?

I work at a veterinary hospital. We had a labrador retriever present with vomiting and other symptoms after eating a pound of grapes. After extensive hospitalization with dialysis, she lived. I read an article that said the smallest reported quantity of grapes or raisins eaten with ill effects was 0.32 oz per kg of body weight. The little boxes of raisins are around 1.5 oz. So if a fifteen pound (or 8 kg) shih tzu eats the equivalent of around two of those little boxes, she could potentially go into acute renal failure. However, the reactions suffered by affected dogs are idiosyncratic, so no one knows WHY it happens to some dogs and not others, or WHEN it will happen. Just some food for thought.
