I'll try to make this long story short. My girlfriend had HPV before we started dating/having sex, but she did not know about it. Months into the relationship, I noticed a small red bump on my penis which turned out to be molluscum. Another bump showed up months later, and after various treatments and almost a year later I am finally completely bump free.My girlfriend had a molluscum bump as well, and hers went away also. Once we noticed these bumps we immediately stopped having sex to lessen the risk of making things worse. Now that we are both completely free of lesions, we want to start having (protected) sex again. From what I understand, if you have molluscum then you will have the virus forever, even if there are no lesions present. Given that both of us don't have any visible signs, how dangerous is it for us to start having protected sex again? Could we cause one another to start showing the lesions again?

How safe is it to start having sex again...?

You are confused. Molluscum is not HPV. I believe Molluscum is bacterial. HPV is genital warts.

I understand that molluscum is not HPV, but perhaps I worded my post incorrectly. Sorry for the confusion.Whatever the case may be, my doctor diagnosed me with molluscum. Now that my lesions are gone (as are hers, which have been for quite some time), what are the risks of new lesions forming even with protected sex?
-
I was incorrect. Molluscum is viral not bacterial, but I have no idea how the virus is eliminated. Perhaps you should ask the doctor who treated you.

I once had a non genital form of molluscum (it's not just an STI. It's just more easily spread that way). I went to a dermatologist and asked about it. Pretty much all they do is freeze off the lesions with the liquid nitrogen. Though I wasn't treated for it, the bumps went away and it's been four years and they never came back.

Mine were frozen off as well, after Aldara cream failed to do the job. After yours went away, was your sex life changed in any way?

Lol I don't have a sex life yet. The doctor said I just picked it up from school or something. Most likely from something as simple as shaking hands. Don't take my word for this next bit cause i'm not exactly sure if the info is correct but if I remember correctly, some viruses can lie dormant in your body for your entire life and you'll never notice the difference, and also you're not necessarily contagious. Every virus is different. I'm pretty sure molluscum is only contagious if you have the lesions.
