The laptop really had a strop today and needed formatting... which we did... now the graphics are really slow, for example when scrolling down the page and when moving items around (dragging IE around the desktop) ... any ideas? sigh

Bloody laptop..

Check your video drivers, resolution, and color quality.
-
I don't know how to check my video drivers! irritated by laptop
-
Just put in the cds that came with the laptop. Check for one labeled "Drivers and Apps" or something. That should fix it.
-
That's where the problem lies! I had to borrow a friends XP cd to install this again, the laptop was given to me and didn't have any cds with it. Dammit! Ah well

Well if you go into your Device Manager and find out all your hardware specs it shouldn't be a problem to google for the appropriate drivers.
-
Go to the windows update site. Instead of choosing express, choose custom. When it gives you the list of updates, look on the left hand side to see if it found any hardware updates for your system. You want to check mark those. Windows update has drivers for a lot of different video cards etc.

There's your problem, XP installation disks don't necessarily have the right drivers for your computer. Try going to the website of your laptop manufacturer, then with your model number and perhaps your serial number (or some other service tag on the bottom of the laptop), you can find the configuration of your laptop and get the right drivers for your model. You can do this with well known brand name manufacturers but I'm not sure about other off-brand models.

What a week. Partner somehow magically managed to fix this problem too - the graphics card wasn't showing up on the device thingy anyway. Complicated! But hoorah, fixed and good as new  thanks for the help everyone xx
