I read somewhere that laws in Canada are nowhere near restrictive as in the U.S. when it comes to prostitution, strippers, massage parlors and nudity. Is this true? I hear that if you can go to a massage parlor and get a handjob, you can go to a strip club and touch the dancers basically everywhere, etc. and it's perfectly legal.

A question for the Canadians

Hi DesertFoxAZ!! Dreaming of visiting Canada to get a hand-job - are you!? lol Canada is certainly more liberal than the U.S. And that liberal-ness shows up most obviously on TV. Whereas the U.S. is seemingly far more comfortable with violence than nudity - it's the opposite in Canada. In Canada - it's very easy to see full frontal nudity [for instance] on TV. It's baffling - sometimes - to be honest. Canadians [generally speaking] are often amazed at just how 'afraid' of the naked body American's seem to be. [the American censors - at least] There are several TV shows in Canada that would NEVER be allowed in the U.S. [at least not on any regular - 'everyone gets it' - tv station] One show is called 'Kink'. It's all about Canadians who are into the S&M scene. There is not a body part that you DON'T see in that show. Canada believes that as long as you warn the viewers that what they're watching is 'not suitable for younger audiences' - that's not only appropriate - but good enough. We believe.. 'if you do not like what you see - change the channel.' Keep in mind - however - that 'we' are anti-violence - so nothing like rape or torture gets by our censors. BUT ...is it 'perfectly legal' to give a hand job at a message parlor and/or to touch a stripper anywhere 'you' like, etc.? I've never heard that. But I'm sure it's not nearly as frowned upon as it is in the U.S. Sorry. Did I just ruin your fantasy of having one hell of a good time in Canada?! GREAT BIG HUGCraig!!

I plan on taking an Alaskan cruise next year and will likely stop somehwhere in British Columbia during the trip. I wouldn't go there for a handjob, but I read some articles about how the laws aren't as restricted over there and, for example, if you get a massage you can get a nude reverse and massage the massuese. Here's the site where I read about this:http://www.sexwork.comI was going to mention the violence/sex issue, but I'm glad you brought it up. I do agree that it's a little warped that violence in movies, etc. is so rampant in the U.S. but sex is almost clandestine in nature. Of course, I have to say that some of my favorite films were pretty violent (Kill Bill, Braveheart, etc.) but overall I think there's something wrong with how we've become almost numb to violence. I heard several people that were appalled that parents took their young children to see violent, R-rated movies, such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which I think should be considered child abuse. I heard of kids as young as 8 were taken to these movies and were crying. On the other side of the coin, everybody gets all worked up about sex, but over pretty tame stuff if you ask me. Case in point -- Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl halftime show. She flashed her nipple and it caused the biggest uproar I have ever seen about anything. God forbid that warped the minds of our youth! I happened to miss that but heard about it the next day. (I think she's pretty nasty looking, maybe she should have tried that 20 years ago when she was actually kind of attractive). They way I see it, a womens' breasts never hurt anybody. I think it's all rather ridiculous.

I agree that us Canadians aren't as scared of nudity and sexuality as the US. As for the violence and agression, I'm glad that I don't see that on a Canadian channel. Of course, we aren't immune to it, seeing as most of the channels we do get here are American. I for one am not desensitized to violence in movies anymore as I used to be. I saw people get chopped up and slaughtered one too many times and cringe to even think about watching a movie like that. I do like the type of censorship Canadians have. We have more of a sense of humour and can laugh about ourselves.

Well, for the record I think Canadian Prime Minster Cretien is a twit.
I think the reason American's are so hung up on nudity is because of the (puritanical) religious ideals that this country was founded on, and most people seem to still adhere to. Funny think though is that everyone's wanting to remove "one nation under god" from the pledge of allegiance and "in god we trust" from our money.
A lot of people argue that the drinking age should be 21 because "at eighteen I can die for my country but can't have a drink." Guess what, it used to be 18 in several states and is now 21 everywhere. Why? I think it may be because some 18 year olds are still in high school and they don't want younger high school kids getting easy access to it (although, they do anyway). With all the advertising (and beer companies seem to spend more on advertising than any other industry), no wonder why kids know about alcohol. But the argument because a lot of young people drink doesn't mean they should change the law for that reason.
I know several Canadians that moved to the U.S. and they love it and wouldn't move back. They all have become U.S. citizens. The culture is a bit different. (and from what I hear the Canadian economy isn't doing so well either) All I can say is at least we can more or less move freely between the two countries. Be thankful for that.
I think anyone who disagrees with America and doesn't live here, doesn't get it. I don't expect them to. America and Canada are in most ways similar, but they are different countries with different governments, and the cultures are also more different than most people would typically think.
Enough of this, I did not mean to start an argument about which country is better.

we have a new prime minister.. for a while now..
-
You know, I just read that not long after posting that. I wasn't aware of that. What happened? Was there an election? I watch the news a lot and didn't hear about anything. I guess they didn't think it was newsworthy down here.
-
Well heck, that news never made it down here. I guess we have our own upcoming election to spend all our time talking about. Why did Chrétien step down?
-
I guess they didn't find that newsworthy.
