hmm so apparently college requires me to go to an orientation. What I didn't know was that it lasted 2 days.. we are going to be divided up into multiple teams. Then there is even going to be a "dance" involved. We are spending the night there.. and if we don't "check in" witha room mate they'll assign us won.Wunderbar. I get to spend the night with some random person I don't know. I am half insane and odds are they will probably either A. freak out as soon as I play what I consider "good music". Or B. it just won't end pretty no matter how many letters I put down.Ontop of that.. the only music they ever played to any "dances" i have been to is rap.. so yeah.. I hates dat dere rap..As if I didn't have enough problems already >.

Orientation

Remember it's only two days and one night, so it will soon be over. Also, most people will be feeling shy and uncertain too. If you give other people the benefit of the doubt they probably will too, and at these things very good friendships can get started. Try to keep a positive attitude and see what you can get out of it.
-
Like Ineligible said, it's only two nights. So nothing to get on about. The great thing about college is that it exposes you to new things, be they ideas, manners of thought or people and it's through those exposures that we grow as individuals. Let go some of your preconceived notions and you might just find a whole new world opening up to you. You may find things that you thought you hated aren't so bad or even that you love them.I think you'll be surprised just how open people are to new experiences and ideas when their away from their comfort zones, even the ones you think people will "freak" about. Don't sell people to short, college is in no way high school and now is your chance to explore others as you find out better who you are through that exploration.Explore, learn and enjoy the thrill of something new because as life goes on those kinds of thrills get fewer and fewer, for most. Like the song says, "...life goes on, long after the thrill of livin' is gone."

Yeah, that sounds like it sux. I'd be mad to if I had to go.One piece of advice for you: If you want to come out on top of this, don't be acting all shy. These are all college kids and I guarantee there will be several groups of friends who all went to high school together and are all at the same college now or whatever, and I wouldn't even try to join in with them (they'll think they are way to cool for you).If you don't find any of your own friends there (you never know who you might see), approach someone and spark up a conversation. You'll want to find someone you think you can get along with, and youd on't want THEM to assign you a roommate either. When I got assigned a roommate at military school, they put me in with this guy I had known from the school year (this was during summer school) and he ended up snitching on me for weed and got me kicked out. So be careful.
-
there not mandatory.. (at least mine wasn't cuz i didn't go) Quote: If you don't find any of your own friends there (you never know who you might see), approach someone and spark up a conversation. he's right about that. u never know who u'll see or who will come up and talk to u. i was approached by some.(well they were mostly all girls but still...i was approached and talked too. in my math class i guy noticed i wore alot of fox and alpinestar shirts.. he asked me wut i rode and he was a BMXer. we actually talked a some about bikes but he dropped the class. kinda sucked i need some guy buds.. all theses girls are sissing me up lol) but yea they were from my classes tho but still by a couple months they got me talking back. having conversation instead of to the point / yes and no answers like at first.

I just went to my orientation about a week and a half ago. It's really not that bad at all. If anything I thought it was fun. The girl I shared a room with was talking in her sleep for most of the night but it really could have been much worse. It helps to remember that everyone else there is in the same boat as you so take advantage of the situation, meet some people and have fun.
-
I joined the university orientation and the dormitory orientation when I entered university.I chose to live in dormitory where I needed to share a room with someone whom I might not know.It may be not easy for you to share a room with someone you don't know, but who knows! You and he may get along well and become best friends afterwards!I met my roommate at the very first time when I moved in. We did not know each other as we were from different schools of different district. But we clicked and got along very well. He is still my best friend (I have graduated from university for nearly a year) and we hanged out sometimesTreasure this opportunity and make more friends! It can be fun, but it depends on your attitude!Good luck man!

Meh. Sorry but, I have to disagree with some of you.
I'm a pretty easy going guy. I have no issues listening to new ideas or trying something new.
My problem is that I have this overwhelming feeling its going to be the same music that everyone else plays at all "dances".
I don't expect it to turn out like everything else does in highschool.. I just don't expect it to be signifigantly different.
I'd have a heart attack in joy if I got into the dance and suddenly "DU HAST MICH GEFRAGT, UND ICH HAD NICHTS GESAGT" by some miracle blared over the speakers. It wouldn't be a new experience for me.. (well yes.. music I actually like being played would be new). And I know probably 90% of them will have never herd that before. However, I tend to have a feeling the music is going to be oriented towards the majority.
But, I somehow doubt its going to be rammstein, korn, disturbed, dry kill logic, or any of the music I actually like. And odds are I'm not going to sleep there.. so unless my room mate really likes metal I'll probably scare the shit out of him.
I really can't say I'm "OMG OMG" freaking out.. however, seems like a thorn in my foot at this point.
I am not one of those people who feels they need to be different from everyone else to be cool. I just have my interest.. and stuff I like.. which is pretty far away from the normal "cool" xD. Then again I guess I did get a sadistic pleasure from the simpletons thinking rammstein was devil worship music xD.
-
I don't understand your concern over the music. Do you use an IPOD or something like that? What's wrong with earphones for one stupid night? And who cares about the music at the dance.. The goal is for people to meet each other etc.. I think you're making a mountain over a molehill. Get a grip.
-
Think about it this way, if you get out and meet a few people you might find someone else there to bitch about the crappy music with.
-
Erm.. Did you not read my post right above yours? I already said its not like I'm going to die or anything. Its really more of a "crap.. gotta pull a thorn out my arm" then, an "OMG I GOT SHOT HELP HELP"..My remarks about the music were stating the sad irony that odds are the music played isn't going to be new to anyone when college is "about expanding horizons". Meh right now I am not freaking out over it like most of the people I know arm. I am not "shy" or "afraid to talk" to anyone. In fact if it wasn't for the fact I am in a hazy relationship right now (which may change by then) I'd probably be talking to every girl there.Meh. I feel safe in saying most of them will probably be afaid of me so I'm not worried about them thinking they are "cool".The best way I know to phrase it.. is I like tennis. I have no problems running/jumping/acting like an idiot playing tennis. However, outside of tennis I'm not into sports. Pretty laid back. I prefer a good night with a few close friends where we are just acting stupid and playing games. So this event which most people will enjoy I don't care for.Its about the same as making your average person who only plays games casually try to play video games geared towards hardcore players. Odds are unless their a video game addict your not going to get them to sit down and pick up on a game and it will be less enjoyable for them. So force em to try to play the game for 2 days in a row.. they aren't going to appreciate it.Pretty much the same situation. Its not a big deal. But, no one likes being forced into something not geared towards them.
-
And odds are I'm not going to sleep there.. so unless my room mate really likes metal I'll probably scare the shit out of him. I was mainly referencing this. Why do you have to play music so that everyone can hear? Why are you bowing out of staying overnight?
-
First of all, you should probably stop assuming things that you don't know to be true. Like all you'll hear is rap music. Like no other kids there will be into what you're into. This is college, not high school. Shoot, I know those bands you listed very well and I'm considerably older than you. Of course I'm immensely cool as well. But it almost sounds like you have a need to be all different and stand out from the crowd and maintain a certain kind of 'uniqueness'...which leads me to...Secondly, stop being such a snob. So you think your taste in music is superior. That's fine. We all think that. Of course, I'm the only one here who can truthfully make that claim. Remember, you're going to a college here, not the local Dairy Mart. You think you're extreme...well hang on to your hat buddy. You're fixin to find out just how boring and mainstream you are.Thirdly, why are you making such a big deal about music? I know music is important. It's about my favorite non-human thing in the world. But your orientation will be about so much more than that. A 2 hour dance is a blip on the radar screen. Keep in mind, this is your first night of your college experience. And your college experience should include a healthy dose of growing up and seeing that there's a big old world outside of the one you and your buddies have been living in for the past four years.Enjoy it! Learn something! Get new experiences!
-
Lol. I am not worried about being unqiue or mainstream. I love some video games which are mainstream as they come. (final fantasy 7, legend of dragoon, ect ect). I was/still am a fan of linkin park doesn't come much more mainstream then that. Heck although less famous around my area.. go anywhere on the net and say "rammstein" odds are people will know what your talking about. However, it is hard for me not to assume every major event that I have ever gone to unless specifically oriented towards people who like metal.. is predominatly rap. Its the downside of living in louisiana..I can't say I am extreme.. I don't have piercings, tatoos coming out the wazoo or anything most people would consider "extreme". However, in honesty I have to admit alot of people are scared of me and I get a sick thrill out of it xD.As to why I'm making a big deal out of it. I think I just listed one of the things buggin me about it and it sorta blew up more and more over conversation. However, I do have to admit when you like one thing and everyone else likes another.. I mean when you go to a school dance and they play the same song that everyone walks around school singing 3 times at one dance.. you would think they could take down one of those songs and cater to the rest of us who would enjoy hearing something totally off the wall. I do agree I have made too many assumptions. However, I should probably point out I'm not like alot of the people who seem to be crying over this stuff. To me this is a fresh start and a chance to prove highschool doesn't make a shit of a difference in the long run. I'm not one of those people who hate things because they are "mainstream" and I don't like things because they are "mainstream" I either like it or I don't.Oh well luckily I found out I'll be able to go home at least. I just don't know whats require at this point.Oh btw points for actually hearing of those bands. I just randomly came across them over the net and thought they were awesome.
-
I'm concerned that you seem to think that because you won't sleep well you'll be playing metal all night. If I'm reading that right, that's not acceptable regardless of what sort of music it is. If it's been your practice in your own room to play music when you can't sleep, in a shared room you can't do it unless you use headphones.
-
Lol.. Found out won't have to stay the night xD.And yeah.. it pretty much is my practice to play music till I go to sleep or at least I'm ready to attempt. However, if I had to share a room I wouldn't sleep much music or no music.
-
Well I hope you never have roommates becasue you can't have it your way without some give and take.
-
I can't say I ever intend on having a room mate. I just don't sleep well with other people in the room at all. If worse ever comes to worse and I do have to have a room mate I'll bite the bullet and meet em half way.
-
i'd probly have truble sleeping with a roomate too. but that's one of the many reasonbs i go to a college near my house. in another year i'll tranfer to a private college .....witch still is near my house lol. but i knwo some people don;t live near any kind of colleges or uni...i'm alot like u tho.(in the sleeping with radio on) korn, disturbed, and linkin park are wut most the populars listen too.. they get alot of air play and peopel like wut they hear all the time on the radio. tho i dought the'll play them at a dance...there not really dance type music. i think thos bands are kinda mild acually tho. when i started dating shannoon she talked me into going to one of the youth dances that the one of the big horses hsows put on. i didn't want to go... but i got teamed up on and the girls made me. i thoguth all they'd play was country (i don't like downing peole for wut they like or don't like..but i don't care for country musc ick!) very surprising they played all kinds of music. a little country to rock and some oldies..they even played metallica and korn's comming undone. Very little rap and the rap like music they did play was more like hip hop i guess really. but it wasn't wut i was expecting. they played wut was being played on local radio stations... the difference tho between my situation and ur's is i was with a group (gf, ex gf, a girl i grew up with and a few i have known a few years) anyway... i sleep with my radio on. always have .. my brother does it and i cuz we shaired rooms untill i was 15... i just picked it up i guess. i acually sleep better when it's really noisy. i sleep better sleeping on the couch downstairs while every one is in eating lunch than i do at night.
-
Lol... If people around you know who korn and disturbed are.. Your lucky. Around here your a "satan worshipper" If you listen to that kind of music.I had people on a daily basis ask me if I worshipped satan. (whats bad is it was the same people over and over). I actually agree.. I personally don't view korn and disturbed as "hard"As to "dance" music.. I really am not inclined to call what most people "dance" to as "dance music" xD I personally think most of the "dancing" is more like having and orgy with clothes on.I really need to get in to some classical and try ballroom dancing or something xD Maybe swing..
