http://pressesc.com/01184951882_hiv_vaccine Quote:HIV vaccine ready for clinical trialsSubmitted by Vidura Panditaratne on Fri, 2007-07-20 17:20. A vaccine that is capable of delivering a double whammy against AIDS-causing human immunodeficiency virus by both providing immunity against the infection while at the same time destroying cells infected by the virus is ready for clinical trials, a group of Russian researchers announced today. The team from Vector State Scientific Center of Virology and Biotechnology, Kol’tsovo, Novosibirsk first reported their research on the CombiHIVvac in the journal Doklady Biochemistry and Biophysics in May 2007.The vaccine is an artificial virus-like particle whose outer casing consists of the TBI (T- and B cell epitopes containing immunogen) protein constructed by the researchers combined with the polyglucin protein. This protein contains nine components stimulating different cells of the immune system: both the ones that produce antibodies and the ones that devour the newcomer. The DNA coding the TCI (T-cell immunogen) protein is contained inside the protein casing. The protein contains more than 80 HIV proteins fragments selected in the optimal way, which should activate the immune system. The researchers have selected only conservative fragments -- the ones that remain constant in the course of all major changes of HIV-1 and will certainly be noticed by the immunized organism there by enabling the immune system to catch the virus even if it changes its form to “hide” from the immune system. The coating and the filling of the particle represent independent vaccines, which cause specific cellular and humoral immune responses. In the assembled form, the combiHiVvac vaccine is a particle 40 to 100 nanometers in diameter, approaching in size to the HIV-1 virus. The antibodies which are formed inside immunized mice under the action of vaccine recognize the real HIV-1 proteins and neutralize the virus. This was shown by the experiments on the cell culture infected by the virus and processed by mice’s antibodies.Preclinical trial findings allow to hope that the combiHIVvac vaccine will effectively fight even against modified HIV-1 variants. The new vaccine is nontoxic as even a fivefold dose does not cause organs damage. Repeated injections reinforce inflammatory processes in the livers afflicted by other conditions. The combiHIVvac vaccine does not cause autoimmune diseases or anaphylactic reactions, and it does not weaken the organism tolerance to infections either. The scientists emphasize that as the combiHIVvac vaccine not only stimulates antibody production but also destroys the cells infected by the virus, this vaccine can be considered not only a prophylactic one but also as a therapeutic one. The vaccine they developed is ready for clinical trials, the researchers declared.

HIV Vaccine ready for Clinical Trial

Lets hope it works.

I was actually thinking the same thing. I would hope if this vaccine works as great as it has already show that the Russian lab would dispense the vaccine to the other nations or if nothing else "teach" other labs how to produce the vaccine. This has been the best break through I have heard in awhile, I'd hope it wouldn't fall into all the political mess but we all know it will.
-
Exactly. There is already talks on another board I belong to about how they would not be surprised if people would not have to make personal trips to Russia in order to get the vaccine. I personally don't think it'll go that far, atleast I hope not.
-
An Amazing break through, it it really works. I do hope it does. A medical miracle in the works.
-
Hmm.. I am going to try to push this to a new direction.Lets say we can cure it which would be awesome (not going to suggest that wouldn't). I have to ask about the other side of the coin. The world works with exchange. To gain anything we have to give something of equal value in return. If we get a cure for aids.. what are we going to lose?
-
I don't think the world works on exchange at all. Plants grow in the ground without consuming equal value, and much other good can be done that benefits all. And evil can be and is done with no good resulting.
The fact that this is a Russian invention should theoretically not change things much. It will presumably be patented world-wide, and the patent owner(s) will then either make it themselves, or license it out to others. Since Russian manufacture will probably be cheaper, this could be good news for African countries. The biggest issue will probably be local country approvals. In the US it will have to wait for FDA approval, and the FDA has a habit of going slow on drugs with foreign patentees. They are sure to want a lot more tests. Many other Western countries tend to wait for US FDA approval, though on this one they may not.
So it is quite possible that there may be a period when Americans go to Russia for treatment.

I have to agree with Ineligible. I can't think of anything that we could lose if we cured HIV.
-
I know what you guys will lose, one of the conservatives' best arguments for abstinence.
-
Erm guys I'm not just trying to stir shit here. I'm not about to go out of my way to produce some arguement and then struggle to debate it. You all are intelligent people and you can honestly consider what I have said, or toss it aside. I would hope you could entertain a thought without nessicerly agreeing with it.that being said I'm not looking at this from a conseravtive point of view. The "waht do we lose" point of view comes strictly from the center. As to it being a russian invention. Money talks. If people have aids.. and there is a cure.. There is ALOT of money to be made by getting it in america. Money buys grease.. grease turns wheels. Wheels get things movin.

Please don't make generalizing statements like this one, which seems to imply that all conservatives are pro-abstinence. I don't think that stereotypes and generalizations do much except agitate and offend.

To both Nny and cocky727:I do hope you realize the person you are replying to is Bob.
-
...er...yes, I do realize that...have i made a mistake?
I don't doubt that bob is a simply wonderful guy, he's a very longstanding member here and I have found his posts insightful and valuable numerous times over the past (I've been reading A2A for much longer than I've been a member.) That said, his comment rubbed me the wrong way, and I said something about it because I feel free to say what's on my mind in this forum, short of maliciously offending anybody. If it was real life or something I probably would have kept my mouth shut and been CONSERVATIVE about the whole thing (har har).

Thank you, that means alot to me
-
Well obviously if you are a conservative and you do not promote abstinence, then the statement doesn't apply to you or anyone else with your viewpoint.
What I said was meant to be humorous, not malicious. As are most of my posts. I'm sure Thor would agree with me, he usually gets a good giggle out my evolution posts.

I've started using [e-]***[/e-] to make it known now. But I have to wonder, if it took Russian scientists to find a plausible vaccine, how long ago could other, more advanced nations have found this out if they really devoted time and dollah's to it? Oh well, we had the moon, they can have HIV. I just hope this thing works. It'd be a Godsend.
-
Well since you didn't use the "[e-]***[/e-]" then I'm gonna have to take you seriously here. What the hell kinda difference does it make that Russian scientists made the discovery? Do you honestly believe the stereotypical image of Russian scientists being underfunded and taking shortcuts at every turn? Russia is as fucking advanced as other nations, its not the big communist hell hole that the American government led people to believe during the Cold War. Do they have their problems? Yeah of course, they have their own society there, but don't ever think that you're more advanced than them.
-
Trivia: Russia has a higher ratio of medical doctors to everybody-else than any other nation in the world. No, i don't have a link or anything to back that up, i just remember reading it in an atlas a few years ago.

What I was referring to is that the U.S.S.R has been down for what? Under 20 years? And the AIDS pandemic has been around since what? 1970's? We (American scientists, British, German, etc.) nations that are supposed to have the most advanced health care systems (excluding health care insurance)in the world; why is it taking us so long to achieve the same results? As stated earlier, it may have something to due with money funding (needlessly or not) other programs. I think if these advanced nations would've put as much cash towards things like aids, cancer, other means of fuel -- ya know, the IMPORTANT stuff -- then perhaps we wouldn't be lagging so far behind. As advanced as we're supposed to be.
