Here is a thread about Limewire from earlier this year. Its got some useful info including tips on what not to download.

Limewire
-
i only use limewire. it can be slow sometimes, but it works the best for me.
-
I didn't know you could do that. Can you tell who it is downloading stuff, or just view WHAT they're downloading?
-
Curful Helmy, that's how people get busted.Just for clarification: It is illegal to share, but not to download. When you get your p2p software, turn off the share feature and you're good.btw, I use bearshare. I find that it manages to find songs that no other software can get...dunno why the software makes the difference but it does.

Oh, ok. I just get paranoid anytime a folder is shared. I saw a girl get sued 125k for downloading music six years in the past. The girl doesn't even do it now and has settled for 6k.

So, it's not illegal to download??? I've been so scared to download stuff. I'm scared I'm gonna get busted. Anyone have any tips?
-
Technically it is. But people do it. My kids download all the time, but I've go in a disabled anything to do with sharing/uploading and bandwidth for uploads.I don't know about the girl bmoc mentioned for downloading 6 yrs in the past. I know they've gone after people who provide the files for others to download.
-
Do you think I'll be "safer" if I kept my music on an external hard drive?
-
Yeah. Like Helms said, he moves the downloaded files to another folder so that the program thinks there is nothing there for upload.
-
All this sounds confusing

simple cut and paste from the default folder (can be seen in user options) and a folder you designate. As far as the legality of the downloading, it is more or less like downloading anything else on the web. Whole sites are designed to provide free-ware (not open source). http://www.download.com comes to mind you can get tons of stuff there...not music however. I guess it depends on the perspective. I can see how they would consider it illegal to download, just like purchasing pirated movies; but at the same time I feel it is just like downloading ad-aware, or spybot off the internet to protect against viruses.

I use Limewire, though I used to use Bearshare. I think Bearshare is probably just as good for music, and is maybe a little less polluted by shit you don't want, but I chose limewire because I think it has more videos to offer.Definitely turn off the share feature- it will help to safeguard you legally and its just better for your computer in my opinion.Almost nobody gets busted just for downloading, its sharing, or uploading, that gets people in trouble. My campus monitors uploads. I like to compare the situation to underage drinking- if you're 18 and drinking, that's frowned upon, sure, but its whoever PROVIDED you the booze that's screwed.

Meh you can't go wrong buying your music. The main thing I dl now is stuff I can't get in america.. or I would have to wait a year to get it.Hellsing. drools. thank god for fansubs.
-
oooo yes you can, i despise the idea of paying 15 bucks just for ONE song on a cd from someone i otherwise dont care for its a waste of money, as it is ive only downloaded songs i either dont want to buy an entire cd for, or never get to hear otherwise
-
itunes allows you to pay for the single song.
