When my girlfriend and I started dating, she gave me head twice. Then she suddenly sort of stopped being willing to give me head. Every time I asked, she said she was too tired or didn't feel like it right then. Recently, she finally told me why she didn't want to give me head anymore. She told me that her mom sometimes gets cold sores on her lips and when she was younger, my GF thinks that she "might have gotten a cold sore." She said that she thinks that what her mom had must be the oral kind of herpes, and she thinks that it might have been passed down to her. She hasn't been wanting to give me head for a while because she thinks that she could accidentally give me herpes if she has it. I was wondering if this sounds like she is correct in that she might have a type of herpes that could potentially infect my penis if she were to give me head. If so, could I get it even if she didn't have a cold sore while she gave me head?I am also just generally confused about the 2 different types of herpes and how they are transmitted/where they can be transmitted between. Can you clarity this for me?Also, if it is safe for her to give me head and you find a web site that I could show to her to help prove that it is safe, can you post that? Thank you so much!!!

There are two strains of the herpes virus. One prefers the mouth area and causes cold sores; the other prefers the genital area and causes genital herpes. However, both can infect the other area, though the infection tends to be milder if it's not that strain's preferred area.Unfortunately it has been estimated that at least 10% of cold sores are actually the genital strain. It's therefore very wise not to have oral sex (or to kiss, either) when there is a cold sore break-out. Cold sores are very infectious. When there isn't a break-out usually there are no viruses on the surface and the person is not infectious, but unfortunately the viruses come to the surface and the person becomes infectious just before a breakout. Often there is a tingly feeling at this time, though. If she uses acyclovir cream, and avoids oral sex when it feels tingly or there's a sore, the chances are very low of passing it on.

Is it possible for her to have gotten the virus from her mom? I guess I need to figure out what she meant by she "might have had a cold sore when she was younger"

Yes, cold sores are especially passed on by kissing. The virus hides inside cellular DNA and can never be got rid of. However, if she had it when she was younger but has had no outbreaks since, either it wasn't a cold sore or it was a very mild one.
