All right. So over the last 2 months, I've been intensely cardio training (long runs and whatnot). And I've been doing 100-200 pushups and situps each day. To say the least, I'm fairly pleased with my progress in building up my stamina. I've decided that I want to work with weights now, but instead of renewing my YMCA card, I've decided I would like to buy some free weights and work from there. My only problem is, I have no idea where to buy these weights, and what to start with. I'm in Canada, unlike most people on this site, whom are probably American. I just don't know what to start with. I was thinking of investing in some dumbells, and learning some exercises I can do to work specific areas in my body with them. I just have no idea what weights I should be starting with, and eventually what to do once I feel that I have gained enough muscle to move up in weight. Basically, I was looking on random websites, and I saw a pair of 40 lbs dumbells for $30 american. I thought that that would be good for where I'm at at the momment. By the way, I'm only 16 years old, and wanting to up my body strength inbetween my schoolwork and social life, and will be dedicated to working out everyday, whether it be cardio, or weight training. I just have no idea where to start right now, and am looking for some advice. Sorry for rambling on so much. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Where to buy weights? What to start with?
-
I was actually looking around on websites where I may be able to buy weights in store (I have no credit card or anything of the sort to buy things online), and I found something I thought would be good to start with:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/produc...D=1187415228824 -
What do you mean by that?
-
Also I wouldn't be able to get what you suggested for another reason." Offer valid only in the United States."
-
Really? For me it goes straight to the product... Let me try it again. http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/produc...5ae70ff3648152fThat is the exact link when it is put into my adress bar. Hopefully it works for you too. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So is that weight set no good? Because I have no problem spending that much cash on them. Also, I have to either buy at a garage sale (solid suggestion), or in store. I can't buy anything over the net, mainly because of my moms irrational fear of it . I've been looking on websites for a few days, and that was probably the best set I found, for the best price.

Thanks for all of your help Helms.

Having used a gym for a while, and worked out what I wanted and needed I bought everything I needed for my home gym in one hit. I bought; One power rack, with a high/low cable machine attachment ($400~ AUS$)An adjustable incline/decline bench ($300~)One standard barbell ($40~)Two spin lock dumbells ($20~)2x 20kg plates4x 10kg plates4x 5kg4x 2.5kg4x 1.25kgTotal: 115kg or so. ($300). All rubber coated.Delivery was around $120Because I bought bulk they gave me huge discount and it ended up costing around $900 (Australian).Since then I've bought a few additions, including another two 20kg plates, but otherwise the set up has been perfect. Especially considering I'd have spent $400 or so every 6months signing up to a normal gym.So if you have the money it's a worthy investment. Just be sure you've got the self discipline for motivation, good thing about the home gym is you can play whatever music you want, watch whatever TV you want (although it can be distracting), make as much noise as you want, do gym at odd hours without having to drive there or back, gym topless/in your underwear (which I do because I get quite hot), you never have to wait for a bench or a certain weight, etc, however, you lose much of the motivation a big sparkling gym full of like minded people can bring you.As I said before, it can be expensive, but well worth it.

Yes, one of the main reasons I wanted to get somew weights for home, is because I'm not going to have time to go to the gym once school starts. Between my studies, and work, I'll have barely any free time to go to the gym, making spending monthly money to go, not seem worth it.
