I'm not sure I would go as far as to say that trying to fit into a clique is what teens do to discover themselves. I would think of self discovery as a byproduct in this case.The girl I mentioned was trying to gain social acceptance by trying to play a stereotypical role of a certain group. When she was going through her 'redneck spell', I got a chance to talk to her. She would go to mud bogging pits and watch her 'friends' race their trucks even though she didn't even like going. If she were going to events like this to discover herself, then she would have probably stopped going once she figured out she didn't like it. She continued to go because "that's what redneck's do around here". That mentality caused her to follow instead of being herself. Sheep isn't really a good analogy because a sheep isn't trying to be anything other than itself... but most people get the point.
