So i am having Hernia surgery this coming Tuesday and i am a little nervous. I aquired a hernia from years of Wrestling in Jr High and Highschool, and Mixed Martial Arts. I went in the other day to the surgeon to have it checked and set an appointment. Well it turned out i have 2 Hernias one on each side. He went through the procedure and everything with me but i am a little nervous about the anesthesia. I know theres only like 5 deaths per million anesthesias but it still makes me a little nervous. My question is has anyone ever gone under anesthesia and is there anything to really worry about? Also what is it like, how long does it take for it to effect you etc.

Surgery this coming tuesday, a little nervous.

I had general anesthesia once. It took effect almost instantly. Generally you're very groggy and sleepy for a while when you wake up from it. The only other effects I noticed were a nauseous feeling which is very common after anesthesia and a dry mouth and thirst. Of course surgery is scarey, but I wouldn't worry about the anesthesia too much. Bad effects from it are, as you said, very, very rare.

Alright thanks alot for the input, i feel better now.

Dude, wow, anesthesia. What a great concoction of man. I love the stuff. Sure there's only 5 per million but I believe more often death results from a reaction and/or too much relaxation of the cardio muscles. You'll be fine man. The fact that you're probably healthy from all the sports will definitely help your surgery be a success. I believe hernia ops are relatively moderate aren't they? Either way you'll be fine. My best advice would to be enjoy the ride :D.What they'll probably do is numb your body up with something first. I had lydocane. You'll feel relaxed and euphoric. Then they'll start administering the general anesthesia. Then, you'll just wake up. How trippy is that? Not remembering you fell asleep but just waking up it's a good time. Sometime in the next few years I'll be having a VERY VERY invasive procedure, and I'll welcome the general anesthesia :). p.s. for pain killers if you can have it, ask for demeral. That stuff is awesome.

if it were true there were 5 to a million deaths with it... my family would probably be dead.We have had alot o surgery in my family... me my mother and father have probably all been gassed at least 3 times (each)within the last 5 years.. well maybe its been a longer span then that..I am over due for another gassing myself for wisdom teeth.. although I may not get them out..But, the point is we have all been gassed... alot..

I had surgery a few weeks ago. That was the weirdest thing ever. I hated it because they made me take my contacts out and when I woke up I couldn't make out anything and was sick from the blood/anastesia meds in my stomach. The blood was because the surgery was in my throat. And usually after anastesia you throw up...but then you feel ALOT better. So don't worry, it happens and its over.

Nothing really to worry about man. I always thought I would never go to sleep once they open the floodgates of drugs, but alas I think you will go out like a light.I have had three herina operations - one each side and one that needed to be repaired(apperantly this happens once in a while). Its seems that things have goten a bit better since my first one as the pain after third operation was nowehere as bad as the first one. The three operations happend over a period of 6 years so they were not that close together. Not sure what it would be like haveing them both done at once as I had one each time done. But I guess it is best to get it all out of the way.Are they doing keyhole or opening you up. I had a three "open" operations and about a 3 inch cut or so. Not sure of your age but they will probleay have to shave your pubes as well, if open surgery. So be prepaid for that happening. No the best thing to have happen, even if a female nurse did it.ALl the best and I hope everything goes with for you. Let us know how it all workes out for you.

Everyone else has summarized it pretty well.I was under it, not gassed, by via IV for a shoulder stabilization surgery. At first I didn't feel much of anything, but after a few seconds I remember everything going hazzy and my last words were something like "Oh...shit..". Waking up is a bitch. For me it was actually hard too, I really just wanted to sleep, but ofcourse, when you wake up you're likely to get sick. I know most people who've had it are extremely nauseous(sp) and groggy.

I forgot the term he used but he is cutting under the belly button and then 2 other small cuts where the hernias are. Ive actually had 2 hernias before in the same spot when i was about a month old, and i am now 17. I will keep you guys updated on the surgery. Will most likely be tuesday afternoon.

Sounds like that are doing it without opening you right up. The correct term I think is Laparoscopic where they use a camera inside you to do the op. Less invasive and better recovery I think. But I might be wrong as well. If they are doing it this way I guess less chance of getting your pubes shaved off!!
