Do you think people confuse patriotism with nationalism? My friend said that patriotism is stupid and selfish and only leads to hatred but I think she's confusing that with nationalism. I see myself as a patriot because I love my country and being what I which is an American. Isn't that what patriotism means? Love for one's country? And then nationalism is a little more radical.

Patriotism v. Nationalism

Without looking it up and getting technical. I would go with this.Patriotism is a love for your country and a willingness to make sacrifice for it believing that your country consist of people.Nationalism is the idea that the country should come before the needs of the individual to the point where the "nation" is almost its own entity. Best way I know to explain it is somewhat like communism and nazism. Both are totalitarian dictator ships they are however, achieved threw two entirely different ways. However, its also worth pointing out that the Nazi's were nationalist XD.Hm to break it down into its simplist form possible I would say Nationalism is treating the country itself like a person. while Patriotism treats the country as a collection of things rather then a single entity.

They're essentially the same thing. Realpolitik is putting the country ahead of all else. If it isn't good for the country, it isn't done; if it is good, it's done.
Nationalism has it's European roots from the Napoleonic times, which he used as a means of making the country much more powerful, and the nationalism spread to the places in and around his Empire. Instead of associating oneself with a family or the town he lives in, he associates himself as being a part of the nation. Patriotism is essentially the same thing, except that the idea of patriotism comes from the Founding Fathers, who were all male and, therefore, patriarchs. Thus, patriotism. It references the ideas that our Founding Fathers based the U.S. on. Patriotism and nationalism are essentially the same, with the exception being that patriotism refers more to the U.S. and the ideas from the Founding Fathers.
Also, Communism in its true form does not have a dictator. Fascism does, though.

Theory and practicality are always two different scenerios.

Adding on to my previous post.Nationalismnoun1. national spirit or aspirations.2. devotion and loyalty to one's own nation; patriotism. There's more, but the first two are the most common usages of the word. Nationalism is love for your country, but that doesn't mean it's hate for those that aren't part of it.
