How do you feel about school uniforms? I am completely against school uniforms because they supress student individuality by making everybody wear the same clothes. They also can be costly for large families or families that do not have a lot of money. School uniforms are also a form of coersion in my mind. Now, I don't mind uniforms in the following situations:MilitaryRetail positions such as Best BuyThe reason uniforms don't bother me in those situations is because those positions are generally choices. You choose where you want to work, and you choose whether you enlist in the military (unless there's a draft). School, however, is mandatory, and students usually don't much of a say in what school they attend. As a result, students are forced to wear uniforms.Another reason I'm against them is because I know what it's like to wear a uniform to school. I attended Catholic school for kindergarten and I hated wearing a uniform! It was uncomfortable, and looking back, I think they made the boys look like dorks. The girls looked nice, though.I know I said a lot, but now it's your turn to voice your opinion. Are you for or against school uniforms? You can make your response as short or as long as necessary.

School Uniforms: Yes or No?
-
Uniforms are meant to eliminate individuality so that the environment can be about LEARNING. Its meant to equalize everyone so that the HAVE's and the HAVE NOT's are the same. It's intended to reduce the chance that someone will be ostracized just because they dress weird, etc... SO yeah I'm for uniforms.
-
Me too! I love the fact my kids have to wear uniforms. And they are much CHEAPER than buying regular clothes.

Which is the same reasons why I am for uniforms as well.

Finally! A post not about sexuality, touching, kissing, or anything personal.

Uniforms are just clothes. No big deal. I think that the idea that uniforms supress individuality is flat out stupid. And this is coming from someone who wore these things for four years.I personally did not feel like I was being supressed. I managed to stand out with my personality. I played in my school's band, connected with some of my teachers, had a lot of friends, and attended the after school program where I was even more productive. They all definitely knew my name and could point me out in the crowd.
I also wore a uniform for kindergarden. I too went to a private Catholic school. However, I was a six year old kindergardner! What did I care about the uniforms? It was no where an issue because we were kids acting like kids and not worrying about "them keeping us down" with uniforms.
The uniform I wore for middle school were not that expensive. It was made up of a simple white-collar shirt and navy blue bottoms. My mom bought them at K-Mart (you know, before Walmart) so they were cheap. In fact, buying regular clothes is more expensive than the uniforms (but I guess that depends on where you shop). The uniform for the private school was expensive because they were custom made.
Uniforms weren't design to supress anyone. They were made so that school was an acutal learning enviroment, and not be distracted by such materialism. It also eliminates the wrong choices for clothing, like girls showing off cleavage and guys having their pants hanging off their asses.
But I think the most important would be that kids have on less thing to pick at from other kids. Even though they may not know it, kids are cruel sometimes. They make fun of others who may not have the lastest thing in fashion or wear poor clothing.
Go uniforms!

Get over it, you pervert. -
I go to a Catholic school and they have mandatory uniforms. But the school is actually good and let the student body make their own uniforms - with exceptions of course; like it has to have the school logo, and colours, etc..Plus, it saves me a lot of time to get dressed. They're expensive though.I guess it's worth it though. Public school blows and I like it a lot better at a Catholic school. It's way more diverse.

"I am completely against school uniforms because they supress student individuality by making everybody wear the same clothes."
Whether you have uniforms or not, people still will lose individuality by stupid wants like "being cool," or "hanging with the crowd." Uniforms may change that a bit, but at least where I come from, it doesn't matter how you dress. As long as you're not in messed up, same-thing-every-day, dandruff-ed clothing or anything.
I don't think uniforms are much of a big deal but for me, personally, I'd rather not have them just for the purpose of, "I have my own clothes. I might as well wear them." It has nothing to do with style or individuality.
From my experience, it doesn't matter what you wear. People still act like people no matter what clothes they're wearing.

Maybe its the uniforms, maybe its just the different country, but I wore uniforms for 13 years of school and it seemed to cut out a lot of the segregating bullshit that you see all over American schools. And I'm not talking about racial segregation, I'm talking about the childish little "cliques" that we hear people whine about all the time! They just never existed in my schools.

Whoot! Good point, Tony! '-')bThat's so true when I went to school and it still is today. I swear, when I go pick up my sister from school, all the kids look the damn same! :scream_cat:
ADDED:
I always thought it was funny how we want to be individuals, and yet at the same time, we conform and make groups so we can belong somewhere. What's worse, that causes segregation. What's up with that? -
I wore uniforms during elementary school and we still had those stupid "cliques." I'm not even sure if people call it a clique anymore... I certainly don't.But that kind of thing has seemed to die out in my school. I mean sure, there are still the "ghetto-ish" people and the "jocks" but nontheless everyone manages to get along and the only thing that separates friendship so far is unneeded drama, or immature idiots that get the mature people pissed.Hell, for Halloween, a gay guy dressed as an "Out of Closet Dumbledore," and won the Seventh Period Costume Contest! If that's not acceptance, I don't know what is.

Lol. I was genuinely surprised, too. I was sure at least one persone would be against them! And sorry, I don't have pictures. I don't even have a camera! I didn't even take a picture of myself in my Narutard costume.... -sigh- The good news is, my friend did! But sorry, no dumbledore ><
-
Damn that sucks! Whoever that guy was, he sure had great originality and creativity to come up with that idea. I mean, come on, that's pure genius!

Shiiii, I wish we had uniforms AT WORK. It'd save my ass some time and effort. Also, dry cleaning service right in our lobby would be nice. Drop off the old and pick up the new, now THAT would be nice. My GF works at the Corporate Marriott here in SD and it's like that for her.

I agree with everyone else. And I too don't buy the argument that uniforms suppress individuality. If by individuality you mean groups of kids walking around together like little clones of each other, yeah, I guess it suppresses that. If by individuality you mean the characteristics that distinguish you from everybody else, I think uniforms enhance that. Your "reputation" or how people know you is more likely to be about how you really are as a person and not what subculture's uniform you are wearing. As for the cost argument, you have to buy clothes for school anyway. And I am betting that the school uniforms you buy are a heckuva lot cheaper than the overpriced name brand crap you'd be begging your parents to buy if you didn't have uniforms.

Coming from a girl who has to wear a daggone skirt in THE FREEZING WINTER with nothing but some stupid stockings while the boys wear like 50 pairs of pants underneath their uniform. I can truly and honestly say I HATE school UNIFORMS! If the girls were allowed to wear pants then I'm all for it. But as long as I have to wear some daggone skirt while I'm sloshing in the snow in my little school shoes looking like something out of Pilgrim's Progress I am anti-uniforms.

They SHOULD give you options, unless youre in Miami or the tropics. No one should have to endure cold weather.

i heard that

at ym sons school its uniforms, has been for a few yearsthat being said its not exactly uniformsthere are specific colors that are allowed, and so long as they wear those colors pants or skirts are fine. also based on length, I dont knwo the current rule because i have no daughters.the colors are fairly numerous, and no band t shirts or t shirts with any print on them at all. gym has specific uniforms, everyone wears shorts (purple) or sweats (purple and white) and a t shirt with the school name on it and its white with purple letters all gym uniforms are provided at cost through the school. my son hates it but I think he has it easy
-
Yes, but it's not so much against them as more of a "I don't really care but if I HAD to choose I'd choose none."It's not like I have a strong opinion ready to back up why uniforms are bad. Uniforms aren't bad. They're basically clothes, as I believe Virtual_Star stated, but if it comes down to it, I'd rather wear the clothes I all ready have rather than wear something I have to buy again. Understand?
