Does anyone know what is a good, cheap computer?
-
New cheap computer?
-
How cheap is cheap?
-
Around $500 preferably.
-
I don't know if it's the same where you are, but here if you buy a branded computer you tend to be paying up to twice what you would by buying a system assembled from parts by one of the many firms that do that. Furthermore, you can get something exactly to your specifications. The very cheapest places tend to have poor after-sales service, and may go out of business any time, so look for places that are big enough to have more than one shop.
-
Yeah, thats what I would suggest.

I didn't know you could do what Pete said, so that may be the way to go.But this thing is pretty nice:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...d=1188559785299I dunno too much about how good Windows Vista is, but evverything else looks ok (my comp has 1.8GHz btw and it's quick enough to get things done). That doesn't include a monitor though..

Windows Vista is, to put it politely, a piece of ass eating dick shit. (I may have watched too much South Park tonight.)I found an interesting article today that makes my point. Is an upgrade to XP right for you?
-
Or you may want to look at bundle packages. For example, this thing is only $380 (after $170 savings or something):http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=999982000050005&type=product&id=pcmprd81900050005Comes with a monitor and a printer

All of my computers are windows 2000 professional; and it is a good and stable system. Windows XP is good also, but I don't care for it. My tech said that windows vista is not a stable system, yet to stay away from it. You can find some good used lap top computers, for under $500 from reliable company's on the internet.. I find that http://www.pcclub.com is a good sound company and they will build you a computer and guarantee it; I have had all my computers built by them with no problems... just a suggestion! And by my experence!

Need an addy? lol
I am tired of Little bit slowin' mine down!!! I have extra monitors, and extra keyboards, extra....well, everything, but no stinkin' computer to hook it all up to!!!!
-
Yes I have used it, when I first built my new computer I put Vista on it. It lasted 2 weeks before I removed it and installed XP Pro. I hate it, its few good qualities are far outweighed by the many many bad ones. Maybe now that SP1 is coming out we might see some good improvements, but I doubt it.

I look Vista but god its just slow it eats up most of my ram for processing simple task then when I get to gaming =/ XP is a better choice but once Vista has its flaw fixed it'll be an excellent system to use

ok got one, HP s3123w but thank you all for your suggestions, and the second i got it up and running i downloaded firefox, now whats bugging me is;more often then id like it gives me a "cannot find server" message, most of the time i just click "try again" and it goes through but anyone know what the cause of that might be?and yes it came with windows vista home premium, if it becomes a problem i can just install windows XP home right?
-
Yeah you can put any OS you want (except Mac OS, I think). Why go for XP Home? Go Pro, its a lot better.
-
well because i already have XP home lol, although we may be giving that to my brother along with the old computer so yeah i might end up looking into Pro but hopefully i wouldnt have to for awhile

You can replace the mouse just by buying a wireless mouse. I'll work off its own digital "frequency". My wireless mouse has just a little stick that plugs into a USB port. This way you can keep your wireless keyboard and get a wireless mouse that works right as well :). Wireless mouses are cheap, like $19 at best buy.

To answer your original question Dantek, I got an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop with webcam and mic for $459. It's a good, reliable laptop and was actually on sale at the time, so I got it for $359 in all reality. Try going at the beginning of the school year, in August... you will always catch a laptop for a great price, and they are always good ones if you go to Circuit City, where I got this one.
