I've never been able to understand why dogs sometime's sniff people's crotches. Do you know why they do this?

Why they sniff there

Whereas we recognise each other by sight (and have a lot of variation in faces to help recognition), it's more common in the animal world for recognition to be based on smell, and there are scent glands, usually near the anus but often also scenting the urine, to help that. Therefore dogs smell each others' crotches so they'll know each other next time, so they do the same with people. I suspect even we do have rudimentary scent markers in that area.
