Hi,I started on Tri Sprintec pills on last Sunday and am now into the second week of pills. I've heard/read in many places (including webmd.com and from what I remember from the package before I threw it out) to use a secondary form of birth control for 7 days when you first start on the pill. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex today (the tenth day)so I think I should be ok. But I've heard from a couple other sources since then that you should wait about three weeks or so. So now idk if I should get some plan B. What is the typical amount of time you should wait before having unprotected sex while on the pill? And yes, I know pills aren't 100% effective and they don't protect against std's. My boyfriend even said he'd prefer to continue using condoms as well from now on. Any info is greatly appreciated.

If you had sex on the tenth day, you should be fine. Using another form of birth control for the first week is correct.Have fun and stay safe!

Welcome to A2A, Kona. These things are usually a matter of what level of risk you are prepared to take. One site says, of this particular brand, "For the first cycle of use only, use an additional form of non-hormonal birth control (e.g., condoms, spermicide) for the first 7 days to prevent pregnancy until the medication has enough time to work. If you start on the first day of your period, you do not need to use back-up birth control the first week."

I could be wrong.. but, Its ALWAYS a good idea to use a second form of protection..not just within a given time frame..

Follow the directions your doctor gave you along with what came with the pills, and yes it's always good to use backup.
