I've always had this belief that if you stay active when you get sick, you'll get over your illness faster. Is there any science behind this?

Exercise as a cold remedy?
-
I guess because you sweat it off? I always believed in this too.
-
hmm i would have figured that the excess stress on the body weakens it or makes it more vulnerable or something so that recovering would be slower. isnt that why they always say "rest"? just my guess
-
Yes, that's my feeling too. While exercise is normally good for you, when you're sick I think it's better to rest.
-
I agree with this. Exercising when you're not sick can help your immune system, as well as eating right, but doing it when you're sick probably will take away resources needed to heal.
-
Yeah, when you're sick you should rest. Not only will you get a poor workout, already being tired, but you'll drain yourself further making recovery longer.

hit up the sauna, the cold virus cant live in certain temp.

Hi vaioguy, colds often lead to fever. To increase the body temperature further would surely be much more dangerous to the body than to cold viruses. (They may not cope well with high temperatures outside the body, but inside the body they are just going to be at body temperature.)

While I agree with everyone about resting I believe to a certain extent that some form of exercise even when you have something like a cold is beneficial. I don't know that there have been any studies on this but it has been my own personal experience that when I have been sick instead of doing my normal jog, just take a brisk walk with my dog especially if it's warm outside. I always feel better with the sun on my face. Of course the sun helps your body create vitamin D(I think it's vitamin D..i'm pretty sure anyway). The key is not to overdo it because you are sick. And yes, if you're sweating you are sweating out toxins but you are also depleting yourself of electrolytes so it's good to use a sports drink (I personally like gatorade) and when you're sick it seems like your electrolytes deplete faster (maybe it's just me). And don't forget to continue taking your vitamin and drink plenty of water.
